This will probably betray my ignorance but ... why did Eddie make that comment about Jolene?

Eddie used to perform C&W with Jolene, years ago, and he considered her to be divertingly attractive.
I don't think there was ever any proof that he was ever actually involved with her, but I think there were sufficient hints that he wouldn't have minded having a fling, and iirc Clarrie was jealous.
"The one wot was never got" might be more appropriate, than "The one wot got away".

I've always had the impression that Eddie knew Jolene, and had some soret of relationship with her before he met Clarrie. There has often been some sort of unspoken implication that she's an old flame.

You may well be correct, Reggie. I'd always taken it as an affair that was more in Eddie's head than in RL.
