    Hi Tayler.

A query after listening to the omnibus today: Tom specifically talked about the 'Tom Archer' brand when he & Bren were discussing the ready meals. I thought that the new brand was to be Ambridge Organics ? At the famous BF family meeting (sans Brenda), there was a lot of back-biting between Helen and Tom when names were being proposed., and both 'Tom Archer' and 'Henry Archer' were very firmly vetoed by Tony. Is this just Tom living in his virtual business world or are the ready meals to be marketed as TA ? Which will surely mean more marketing costs for labels, packaging etc.

An associated query: has it been mentioned who is the master chef whipping up these meals ?

    Thanks !

IIUC Tom still uses TA for HIS products.

Tom decided to rebrand his sausages (and presumably the other pork products) under the Tom Archer name some time before the decision on the other Bridge Farn produce was taken/ There was no reason to then change the branding of the suausages again because the whole point was to move away from the tainted Bridge Farm name.

    That sounds right, mike.

They were Tom Archer's Bridge Farm sausages, until he decided to distance himself from the tainted Bridge Farm name.

I'm pretty sure they're now Tom Archer's Borsetshire sausages. (If I find the reference and I'm wrong on this point, I'll post back here!)

I seemed to remember that when Tom wanted to pull away from partnership with Brian and move back to Bridge Farm, Brian said that he wouldn't allow it because he had put a lot of time and money into the Tom Archer brand. I thought in the end he allowed Tom to buy himself out of the partnership, realising that Tom wasn't going to be any good to work with any more if his heart wasn't in it, but refused to sell him rights to the brand. Tom therefore had to sell his sausages under the Bridge Farm label (something which Tony also insisted on).

    Is this not correct?

    Hi Badge

This was queried a while back - I'll see if I can find the reference and post back. In the end, I think Tom used Peggy's money to buy Brian out completely.

    I've found the answer!

In 2008 when Tony and Pat decided they wanted to buy their farm, both Helen and Tom supported them in their intention of turning it into more of a family business.

Tom had his (non organic) pigs at Home Farm and was in partnership with Brian. Tom told Brian that he wanted to move, but Brian pointed out that he had put a lot of money and effort into Tom's pigs. So he had to stay.

Tom's solution was to set up a second pig heard at Bridge Farm. It was at this point while they were still in partnership that Brian said Tom was not to use the Tom Archer brand for his Bridge Farm pigs.
The following year Brian set up a deal with a supermarket that Tom found he could not work with. After an unsuccessful attempt to get money from Matt, Tom finally got the funding from Peggy and at that stage Brian was bought out of the partnership and the ownership of pigs and business.

Yes, thanks again, Tayler. Now that I think back a couple of months, how could I forget Tom offering his nearest & dearest a 'share in his profits' under the TA brand. From last night's epi, it rather sounds as though it will be Brenda who'll mastermind the actual cooking of the ready-meal prototypes. Blimey - and with her stressful job !

I seem to remember that Tom's pigs were conservation standard, not organic, when they were at Brian's. So when he moved back to Bridge Farm in 2008(?) he'd have needed them to become organic.

In Monday's episode when Tom and Brenda made the pork chilli, they referred to it as organic pork chilli - did he achieve organic status when I was looking away?

He bought some more pigs (weaners) from Neil, didn't he? The pigs he took from Brian's would have been sold a couple of years ago, so he could have had sold pigs he had reared after that as organic as Bridge Farm already had organic status.

Isn't there some kind of 'chain of custody' for organic stock though - otherwise you could have your farm registered as organic but buy in all sorts of animals and sell them a week later as organic. I thought they'd need to have to be 'born' organic? I may be mistaken!

Yes, Neil supplies him with organically reared weaners. Once the pigs which had been at Home Farm had been sold, he was able to claim organic status. I know because I asked at the time and got lots of info in return, although I haven't kept a record of the thread so can't link to it.
