I must admit to being a bit puzzled by the references to slurry spreading, as I thought most farmers did this to help fertilise their land.
Just before Christmas I saw a farmer spraying slurry from a public road over a hedge into a field. Deevid and Wor Roof are reported to to have received special permission from the Environment Agency to spread on their land, so can I assume that the farmer I saw also had similar special permission? Just what are the rules on slurry spreading, as I don't think this has been properly explained in the script?

GB The problem is nitrate discharges into rivers.
Basically they can't spread when it is wet and likely to drain off, so must store for summer use.
Thank you very much IO. So NVZ stands for Nitrate Vulnerable Zone, so the NVZ record is obviously a record of where Deevid has spread his slurry? Simples. Now why wasn't his explained on TA?
I remember when the programme was an educational acricultural drama and you planted your 'taters' when Walter Gabriel planted his!

I think it probably was - so long as you paid careful attention over several episodes.
I think the programme is now propaganda for the hard lot of our vastly subsidised farmers; plus PC storylines.
But I still like it!
I obviously missed the factual and legal references to to the slurry problem whilst listening to yet another storyline 'set to rock Ambridge'. Brookfield without cows? The second Dan, who created Ambridge Dairy Farmers Ltd. in 1961, must be turning in his grave. (The Herefords obviously don't create slurry. )
I don't think that they are going to get rid of the cows to reduce the amount of slurry produced, just to find the money to pay for the new slurry tank (or whatever it is going to be) via economies, which may mean that the cows are the least cost efficient part of their business.
There's a detailed post about slurry* from Steve Peacock, the new Ag. Adviser, here:

SPOILER ALERT - EVIL *EVIL* PHOTO ON BLOG LINK.
If they pour liquid sh_t on the grass then the cows eat it, I begin to see the benefit of mega dairies.
