Pauses between scenes in TA seem to consist of around five seconds of silence. Other radio drama I've listened to, mostly older, doesn't need do this. Is there a particular reason why TA takes this approach, considering the usual aversion to dead air in radio?
I personally find it helpful to know that there's a change of scene. I can't comment on other radio drama since I don't listen to it.

Ambridge Extra doesn't have such long pauses. It actually made it feel a bit more modern, and didn't seem to be too confusing. Maybe TA should try reducing the silences!
The excessively long silences are fairly recent. At about the same time they had a spate of fading out dialogue before it was finished, or just "stopping dead" when a fade would have been more natural. I suspected they were training a new editor.
To the best of my knowledge The Archers has always been like this - and I began listening in 1951. For a number of years up to the 1960s at least there was the occasional piece of music played between scenes but I imagine this was a time filling device.

There was a long gap yesterday - thought the radio had gone off!
It's only since about Christmas that the gaps have been long enough for me to start standing up thinking that the router has crashed and killed my wi-fi radio.

Hi all
Here's the response from the archivist:
The gap between scenes is just a matter of style. Some here have noticed that in Ambridge Extra the gaps were (mostly) shorter.
Over the years they have changed, for instance - as someone mentioned upthread - back in the 1950s they occasionally had music between scenes.

I found it interesting that they took this up again in Ambridge Extra and it gave the programme an altogether different feel - almost as if to stretch out a relatively fast- paced (compared to The Archers anyway) script.

A few additional seconds during the programme to probably pad out the script(s) -or lack thereof- to fill the required air time.
Agree that it does make one wonder if on-line connection has been broken.

Thanks for doing the research, Tayler, but I must insist that I would not have used the word "occasionally", but "usually" (see threads passim, and I even have examples of the missing music!)
