Can anyone remind me how much Shugs had to borrow to pay off Ali's gambling debts?
Thanks in anticipation.

Hello pb. The timeline says Al confesses to £8000 debts, but I remember Shula bewailing a 100k mortgage. Sorry not to be clear on this, but just wanted to join you in expressing curiosity:

Hah: a much fuller link here - which shouldn't slide around. This takes the debt way upwards:

The link doesn't mention the amount of the mortgage but my memory is of a hundred thousand pounds too. Neither of them mentioned it during their recent discussion which I would have thought implies that it's been paid off.
If it hadn't been I'm sure Shula would have got a dig in on the lines of, 'if we weren't still paying off the mortgage you saddled us with...'

Indeed, Reggie, as she did at the time about her plans for her new car.
Thank you both for this information.
A mortgage for £100000 taken out in 2007. So do we assume they are still paying this?
I am at a loss as to why Shugs didn't buy Topper in the first place, through the business. How much would Topper cost?
Talking of horses, another SL that withered away was the Hassett Harrier one: where is the horse? Did Matt get another vet to put it down?
All very unsatisfactory, but then that is TA now.
The timeline says Al confesses to £8000 debts, but I remember Shula bewailing a 100k mortgage. £8000 to Matt, plus £4000 online debts, I think.
The first time was £8k and we all laughed. The second time was £100k and I still laughed.
I had been amazed that Ali & Shula had bought the Stables outright for something over £500k. Lucky them. And still lucky them with just a £100k mortgage which is presumably quite a bit less after all these years..

Lowfield is fairly clear:
Monday 8th May, 2006
* Alistair and Daniel are enjoying some cricket practice. Daniel is so pleased to have his dad back. Shula has had a call from the Building Society: they will lend the £100K - more if required.

To whom did Alistair owe this £100K? If he was playing online then he would have had pony up before paying poker as he wouldn't be allowed credit.
If he owed Matt the dosh then at that time gambling debts weren't collectible by law. Ali could simply have told him to whistle.

And met with a nasty accident?
IIRC it was 40k Cr Cards and 60k Matt.

Legally he might have been quite entitled to tell Matt to go and whistle. But think of the effect it would have had on his professional reputation if such huge unpaid gambling debts had become public knowledge. I don't think Matt would have kept them secret.

But it wasn't just Matt: it was his online gamboling I mean gambling that had run up thousands of poundsworth of debts as well.
And Matt had bought his IOUs from other punters (I think Chalky was one) at his (then weekly) poker nights.

A drum I bang regularly here is that Shula would have been paid a massive sum by her late husband's insurers (or Caroline's as the owner of the runaway horse that caused the accident). Mark was the cautious type and would have insured himself to the hilt and as a young mid-= 30s?) professional and a partner in a law firm with a very young son the payout would have been massive; the thick end of a million pounds or more I think.
Barwick Green,
Agreed except that the offcial line is that Mark didn't know about Daniel, but maybe he did & that's why he killed himself.
Fp x
I remember Mark's crash; it was exceptionally well done. It's a pity they didn't seem to take the same care over scripting Nigel's demise.
