Hi
It used to be possible for people to post here under multiple identities and it did become a problem at one time. Is is still so? Can you do this from the same email address or would you be doing it from different addresses?
In other words, given that we are all anonymous here, is it possible that some posters we think of as two or three are in fact only one? I'm asking hypthothetically but I have recently recognised writing styles in several posters that are remarkably similar.

Rose, I can't give you the definitive answer but it is certainly still possible to use multiple identities, although I think you now have to use different e-mail addresses to do so. At one time it was possible to to set up any number of identities under one e-mail address.
I think what you may have noticed, because I saw you post a similar question on a thread almost certainly opened by her, is an invasion of the board by a much banned poster known to many of us as 'mincey', from one of her many identities 'mince pie anyone'.
She often comes back at weekend and holidays when the mods are less active and there were at least three attempts under different identities at Easter, there may have been more. One of these she was still using as recently as yesterday.
She has, unfortunately for a WUM, one of the most recognisable posting styles.

It still happens, often for quite benign reasons such as someone "voicing" their pet on a cat or dog thread.

Hi Rose
There are some permissible reasons for people here to have more than one account - as Peet says, posting as your cat or dog is one example! There are also times when posters have questions that are particularly personal and they may create a new account to keep that issue separate from their ML identity.
Having more than one account with the express purpose of disrupting the board (ie sock-puppeting, creating arguments) would result in a ban.
Hope that helps!

Thank you everyone. Three answers that make up the complete answer from every angle I was looking for. How good is that?
Thanks for taking the trouble.
Tayler, did you receive my email last week relating to use of multiple accounts?
Thanks

Hi Badge - I did! Apologies for a tardy response - I'll look into it now.
Tayler
Many thanks indeed. I appreciate your help.

People can change their board name at any time, so a poster with a new name may look familiar without actually having two (or more accounts).
Once-a-Ginge, formerly Alter Ego, formerly Tabby, previously Betty Backhall.
Nothing nefarious going on, I had very good personal (off-board) reasons for wanting to change my name from Betty, and was Tabby for about seven years until, again for personal off-board, reasons I felt a change of name was appropriate. I've been Alter Ego since January, but was never entirely comfortable with that as a name, and have finally thought of something I think I will keep.
(I do have another account, opened when I wanted to talk about something on the Otherwise thread. I do occasionally sign in under that name, but *never* to sock-puppet.)
To clarify, if I have ever posted in a thread under two names it is a simple case of forgetting that I signed in with the "other" name previously.
RosieT also posted concurrently as Rosieonthemove so I suspect the former was her home PC and the latter a different e-mail on her laptop or work PC.
