I notice that this was discussed on Womans hour, as if females playing cricket in Ambridge is new. But there was a ladies cricket team captained by Polly Perks. It must have been 30+ years ago. I hope this will be mentioned by someone in the village who was around then.

    Hi careen

I checked with the archivist and she can find no reference to a ladies cricket team. However in the 1970s Ambridge did have a women’s football team: Pat was the Captain, and the team included Betty Tucker,- Mary Pound, Polly Perks, Susan Harvey, Jennifer, Barbara Dury and Christine in goal.

I do apologise. I used to have a book - cant remember which one - with a picfure of what I remembered as women's cricket but it must have been football.

Ahh - that makes sense! I was interested to hear of a football team though!

This would be around 1972.

The football team was a later departure (Pat only arrived later) and was called the Ambridge Dollies - so totally non-sexist!

Well let's hope the Archers' archives have copies of all the books published about the Archers and this is checked. The book is not only out of print but seems to be throughly unavailable on internet bookselling sites.

Yes it was a Doris Archer book and I usually hang onto these things but it fell to pieces.
Rick - do you mean it was a cricket team?

Yes, Helen I'm sure it was. I remember Polly in her cricket pads. Also wondererd if Nora McAuley would play, but no, she sat on the sidelines in her cardi.

I'm sure those Doris Diary Books fell apart very easily - can't find my copy either....

Your memory is absolutely spot on. Page 68 of DA's Ambridge Diary:

    "22nd May 1972
[...] I certainly had a good laugh at the cricket match. It wasn't just the usual affair between Ambridge & Penny Hassett. It was between two teams of ladies from the WI and Hollerton Townswomen's Guild.

You've never seen anything like it. There was our Jill and Christine and Polly Perks and all the other girls kitted up in great pads and things. I could hardly stop laughing. It certainly made me forget about quarrelling with Dan."

So, not a regular & formal village women's team, nor a formal mixed team, but certainly a team of women playing cricket in Ambridge.

Well I am relieved. Was gonna book myself into the Laurels. Jill and Christine might comment on it.

Fab! Glad we've re-established what this Board is all about - not only consulting the archivist...!!

Perhaps Tayler might enlighten the archivist!
