There was some concern that people might be able to shoot out tractor or trailer tyres in the Brookfield threats storyline. I had my doubts about this, and having several tractors and a more powerful than average air rifle at my disposal I decided to conduct my own research.
The results were that from a range of six feet, there was no damage to they tyres at all.
From where did the information that it was possible to puncture tractor tyres with an air gun originate?
How do you define "more powerful than average"? It's been about 20 years since I was involved with air rifles etc., but back then I was introduced to a couple of "multipump" models that, I was assured, had a significantly higher muzzle velocity than a standard .22 firearm.
And I thought it was the trailer's tyres that were shot, not the tractor itself?
The air rifle that I used is 12 ft lbf the legal maximum power for an unlicensed air rifle available in England and Scotland. It is a .22 calibre firing pellets weighing about 20 grains
It was a trailer tyre in the script, and if it was a commercial super single on a ten stud rim, the most common agricultural trailer application these days, it is considerably harder and has a much higher ply rating than the conventional radial and low profile radial tractor tyre on which I tested.
I can go and test on a super single if it bothers you, but I know what the result will be.
the legal maximum power聽
Ah, but they're dealing with "criminals"... One of the rifles I got to play with was a six-pump unit that had been adapted to allow ten pumps, making it something like 50% more powerful than was strictly legal.
But you are still only firing a soft lead pellet weighing in at about 1 gramme. My money is still on the super single.
And if it is an organized gang of plant thieves, they wouldn't mess around with air guns.

Again, that's an assumption. One of my friends used specialised "hunting" pellets, steel-cored with a pointed tip and a soft plastic flange at the back to seal them to the barrel. He used them to shoot rabbits to feed his pet cat - when he hit a rabbit in the head it would drop, with the plastic flange stuck to one side of its skull and a hole at the other side where the steel core had emerged.

Hi both
I'll ask the team about this after the Jubilee break.
Tayler
I have a .308 rifle that does the same with red deer, and with the silencer attached it is probably quieter than your air rifle. I am not sure what point you are trying to make. A rabbit's skull is a lot softer and more penetrable than a 12 ply super single inflated to 95 psi.
Why would a gang of plant thieves who, according to the police are largely funded by the proceeds of organized crime, mess about with specialized air guns when they have a whole arsenal of cheap conventional weapons at their disposal?
I think not.

I agree with you there. I'm not saying that they did, just that contrary to what you said upthread I suspect it's not a physical impossibility.
It'll be interesting to get an answer, Phostoxin; I just thought "Would that really work?" but didn't have the practical data to back up my vague thoughts.

Surely Brookfield trailers are likely to have worn out car tyres?

That's brilliant, you are a star of ML!
You definitely take the prize of most intrepid ML researcher which I had in my mind awarded to SeaN some years ago when he phoned up a DNA clinic wanting to know about distinguishing between brothers as possible fathers of a child.
OI, if you're going on the public road, trailer tyres have to be road-legal, and agricultural trailers use heavy-duty larger-than-a-standard-car tyres anyway.

c-b I have found that neither farmers nor policemen think that applies to little roads crossing a farm.
Also you are thinking this
I this!
Grip with the knees.

I feel very sorry for the prod team. No one would have expected a listener to have gone out with a gun and shot at their own tyres to check the feasibility of their SL.

They're probably a gang of drug dealers who've got a couple of Uzi sub-machine guns, so won't have to bother with souping-up shotguns

Hi all
The producer has come back to me - they checked the script for the reference and it said:
DAVID 鈥淥ne of them [police officer] said a farmer had a trailer wheel shot at with an airgun鈥澛
This doesn't suggest that it blew the tyre in any way.
Could you let me know if there was another reference to this that we're missing or was that the one you meant?
Thanks!
Tayler
If it didn't blow the tyre, and it wasn't done when you were watching (the range on ordinary air-guns isn't brilliant, anyhow) how would anyone know, anyway?
(Sorry, Tayler - I don't really expect an answer to this)

It is possible that someone had seen the event.
Tayler
Sorry, Tayler - I've got you speculating on speculation!
You'd have to shoot at such close range to even have the possibility of damaging the tyre that, if it were me and I wanted to damage the tyre with an air-gun, I'd probably resort to pistol-whipping it, which would vent my anger if nothing else!

OK, Tayler, I may have the explanation.
I heard the line quoted above as 鈥淥ne of them said a farmer had a trailer wheel shot OUT with an airgun鈥
Because the thought did cross my mind as well at the time that that didn't seem very likely.
Yep, SL, that rings a bell. "Shot out" equals "tyre rendered flat", no?

Yes, as often done with proper guns in films.

Ahh - I see. "Out" / "at" do sound similar!

I think I see the problem, Tayler; I heard it as "...shot /out/ with an airgun...".
Oops, sorry, ShropshireLad; that'll teach me to read to the end of the thread.
