Does anyone in Ambridge have solar panels? The village does seem to enjoy exceptional levels of sunshine, so I'd have thought eco-minded families like the Snells would have had them installed, with people like Susan complaining to Neil how 'orrible they look.

I think you're almost certainly right, Ambridge Hall must have them. But I wouldn't be surprised if Pig Ark View doesn't as well.It was built fairly recently and Susan could easily have jumped on the band wagon to get a bob or two from the extra electricity generated

I used to wonder why there was no windmill story until I realised that they would dare reveal what a ludicrous farce it is.

Nigel had a green phase and needed to get the roof done at Lower Loxley - perfect for solar panels.

And why haven't they got renewables at Bridge Farm?

And why haven't they got renewables at Bridge Farm?

Indeed. They could at least make an attempt to capture all the hot air that Tony spouts.

Aha. I was puzzled that Nigel had slipped off the roof when he claimed to have clambered around on it in his youth. Perhaps he slid down the solar panels which would have been much more slippery than the tiles.

And, yes, Bridge Farm would be an obvious location. Is there a government-led plot that forbids a Radio4 soap from discussing renewables?

I don't often agree with you OI but I do on this one. It would make a splendid and very credible story though for once.

If Lower Loxley is a listed building then panels wouldn't be allowed on the house - though that doesn't rule out putting them on an unlisted outbuilding. It would have made a great deal of sense for the dairy farms to have fitted industrial-scale PV panels to help with the massive electricity costs involved in dairying - all that milking equipment, cooling and hot water use loads of juice.

Serious question: is everyone in Ambridge on mains gas? Because if they're not and they're using LPG and oil, now is the time for someone - Jim or Linda, maybe - to start looking at a heat pump. Heat pumps are now being widely used as replacements for oil and gas in areas where people are off the mains.

With fuel prices and the cost of petrol/diesel going up again, it's time we heard a lot more about the difficulties of running a car/keeping the house warm. Strange that we never hear Jolene complaining about the cost of keeping the Bull warm and snug for her customers.

We don't hear enough about the domestic problems that rural life throw up. The cost of domestic oil heating and cooking (and if they aren't on mains gas then all the oil Agas will be relevant here) has rocketed. They don't grumble about the cost of diesel or petrol when they go to Borchester and we never hear about red diesel for the tractors. we've finally heard about the cost of milk but only briefly.
Around our way every farmer is being bombarded with visits from wind turbine companies about getting subsidies before October if they apply. Apparently the farming magazines have lots of adverts too. It has caused enormous friction and anger in our county. It would make a very credible story in Ambridge. I've said it before but VW is far more interested in shock horror type of drama it seems.

we did hear Ruth weep over the electricity bill - so it would make perfect sense for them to go for a wind turbine, what with the expense of the new slurry tank.

I quite agree. Lakey Hill would be just perfect. It would be intrusive, affect property prices in Glebelands and other places, cause a huge fuss at the Parish Council and split the village. A genuine and relevant story that rural listeners could actually identify with.

Been wondering that myself, shulascat, and rather imagined all the properties in Badgers Leap would have roofs groaning with panels, and Social Services/Council would have covered MrPullen and his neighbours' bungalows too.

Brookfield blew it with the slurry digester - had Dave n Ruth not let themselves be used as stalking horses for the arrogance and greed of Matt, Brian et all, there wouldn't have been all the flurry about the slurry store. They certainly can't afford a solar barn now the tarrifs have been reduced.

Wind's probably not a viable option as South Borsetshire hasn't sufficient 'fetch', and in any case Lakey Hill's in the way.

A hill being in the way doesn't seem to stop farmers where we live.

To be fair we did have plenty about the metane producers being used to power electricity generators - I can't remember where that SL went.

I do agree that the Dopeys must have been tempted by a big wind generator atop Lakey Hill.
