I can't remember which of Matt or Lilian actually bought it or rather in whose name it is, and that might be quite important soon.

Matt definitely paid for it but I have a strong feeling that the ownership is actually in Lillian's name because he bought it for her.
That was what I *thought*, but I can't be sure and don't remember that actually happening. He stayed there and she went away, the times they've had a bust-up.

Hi both
In the gallery ( it says that Matt brought the Dower House for him and Lilian to live in.
I'll check with the team whether he has sole ownership (which knowing Matt, I imagine he has!) or whether Lilian's name is on the deeds.
Tayler
I have a rather vague memory of Matt telling Lillian that the house was safe and couldn't be taken by any creditors, so perhaps some sort of Trust?

Hi Tayler.
Your link is dead (avoid brackets)
What is "The Gallery" ?
Sounds like a good place to put cast photos?

Trying again with the link:
There's a link on the home page to Ambridge Locations with illustrations of the main dwellings.

Thank you, Ms Tayler. My doubt was because Matt seemed to be trying at one point to have no obvious assets that Yvette could find out about, and I thought that the Dower House might be one of them. Lowfield makes it clear that it was Matt's intention to buy the Dower House:
Tuesday 28th March, 2006
* Jennifer and Lilian have a heart to heart about men. Lilian doesn't expect Matt to be faithful but she'd like to think he's loyal. Jennifer tries to persuade him that if she wants to stay with him she'll have to put up with it. It's a walk down memory lane sorting out photos for Fallon's show. Lilian was very happy with Ralph in Ambridge. It was only when they left that things started to go wrong. Matt thinks she's had a tough time but she's got no regrets. She's happy where she is right now. Matt is pleased to hear it. He'll even buy the Dower House. If it would make her happy. Â
I just wasn't sure whether at any point (as when he was concealing assets from Yvette or the taxman or the court) he had put it into Lilian's name.

Didn't he buy it after Lillian discovered he was having a little dalliance with his PA?
I think I remember something being said about the house being safe when he had his bit of criminal trouble and got a lot of his assets confiscated. One of the things that makes me think Liillian owns it.
But I think the purchase was post his divorce from Yvette.
If he bought it after March 2006 I think it was, yes, because the divorce was going on for most of 2005 but I'm sure that story was over by Christmas. As you say, there have been other occasions on which he's been hiding stuff away.

Were we told WHY it was "safe" ?
Or can Tayler tell us?
I am pretty sure I recall Matt telling Lilian he had put the house in her name, just before he went to prison: something like, I want to make sure you will have a home, so they can't touch the Dower House, I put it in your name.
Was it perhaps in some sort of trust? That seems to ring bells, that he said she would always have somewhere to live because he had put it in trust for her. Putting it in her name would be giving it to her, after all, and that would be slightly un-Mattlike behaviour, especially after Yvette.
I said that in message 5 - vague memory of a Trust or something similar
Yes; that was why I said it rang bells! Dinah had made an alternative suggestion which I think makes Matt too much of a good guy for it to be like him.
Sorry: I ought to have put in "as Norma said upthread" after "trust". It was certainly your idea first.
Thank you - 'blush'

Hi all
Just heard back from the archivist and your memories serve you right in that the Dower House is in a trust.
Tayler
What sort of Trust? It's all very well for that to be said, but who benefits from it, and who gets to live in the Dower House if there is despute between Matt and Lilian and they no longer want to live together there?

I've just been flicking back through some synopses but cannot yet find the conversation in which Matt reassured Lillian as to the security of the Dower House.
From memory she had been concerned that they might lose everything, even the House, and Matt reassured her that everything had been tied up in an offshore trust, that she was absolutely protected, and that the House could not be lost.
As to what sort of Trust - well, not a bog standard life interest trust. As an offshore trust the trustees too will be offshore, probably a trustee company (grants further anonymity). Ultimately the control of the trust will be in Matt's hands, but it would be difficult to prove it.
If "they" want to sell, the trust would sell, and doubtless buy another property. If Matt wanted to cash it all in, it might be tricky, but he would eventually be able to get his hands on the money.

The details of the trust weren't broadcast.

Hi Tayler
I've just been ploughing back through some podcasts, but fear the key ones were in an archive up to May 2009 which I inadvertently deleted. Groan.
There was an episode in which Russell Baxter assured Matt that the Dower House was safe (22/09/09) but I also have a clear recollection of Matt at some point saying to Lillian that it was all tied up offshore and quite beyond anyone's reach. I quite agree that no /details/ of such a structure were broadcast - heaven forbid that the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú condone or partake in anything that could be construed as wrong-doing!
