Tayler:
The idea of toothpaste costing £4 - even at village shoppe prices - is universally derided.
Re Emmur shopping, she never mentions 4 letter German shops. Where are the nearest Lidl/Aldi?

Hi OI
There are plenty of toothpastes that cost around the £4 mark. The conversation was to highlight their money worries and shopping on a tight budget.

Asda sells 107 types of toothpaste.
NONE cost more than £4.00
SIX cost precisely £4.00
The vast majority cost £2 or less.
The cheapest is 25p. (I am instructing the purchasing department to switch to that)
The conversation was to highlight their money worries and shopping on a tight budget.Â
We all realise that. But much of what we hear makes us wonder if the scriptwriters live in the same world as the rest of us.
Do they claim benefits?

Sadly, due to une of the "unwritten rules" of TA scriptwriting, Ed & Em can't claim Benefits because we've already heard Clarrie doing this in the past.

'Do they claim benefits?'
It's a valid question.
A number of posters have made a precise list of which benefits Ed and Em are entitled to. So Tayler, do Ed and Em claim them?

Hi PollyGlot
Sadly, at the moment, Ed and Emma are still struggling and not claiming any benefits.

Hi again
Sorry - my misreading - there's been no on air mention of any benefits that Ed and Emma are claiming.
Tayler

What it highlighted for me, Tayler, was that Ed & Emmur seem to have hit on a very strange supermarket in which to do their weekly shop.
One that only stocks one brand of premium priced toothpaste.
(Emmur said "We can get it somewhere else" so obviously no other brands available in this high class establishment).

Quite so. What would have been more realistic would have been "our normal toothpaste has gone up to £3.20 - let's get the own brand instead - that's only 90p" or similar.
Tesco Value toothpaste is 25p. I buy it for self catering holidays along with a twin pack of value toothbruhes. If I eave them behind (which I have done with expensive ones before now, being one of the last things packed), it doesn't matter so much. They have lots to choose from for around £1. Even if the county doesn't boast a Tesco (which would make it pretty unusual these days), there must be at least major high street shop, surely.
Maybe Mary Portas has been let lose on the high street and has given space to an artizan toothpaste merchant.

Do the scriptwriters seriously think there's a person left in the British Isles who hasnt got that message by now ? Please tell them to give it a rest. It's getting tedious now.

It must have been Ambridge Organix - toothpastes nicely arranged beside the deodorant crystals and just round the corner from the hemp oils and rearranged vinegars.
So I still don't know - do EdnEm claim what they are entitled to or not? They'd be due 35 quid a week in child allowance anyway and that would be a help in feeding the ever mewling Keira and continually whingeing George. Please don't tell me that they don't on the ground of pride that would be so silly.

The pump action toothpaste might well cost £4 in some supermarkets
It is economical in the way it dispenses the required amount .. more so than tubes which have to be carefully rolled up from the bottom ..

Bunsoc - See my post 3 above. Asda has NO toothpaste over £4.
Or do you see Emma as a Waitrose customer? Though even there only Sensodyne etc. is so expensive. The dialogue is simply nonsense.
It is economical in the way it dispenses the required amount .. more so than tubes which have to be carefully rolled up from the bottom ..Â
An economy vastly exceeded by extra cost. And if you use a knife handle to press out a tube there is no loss. Whereas pumps cannot get the last bit out.

But Emma clearly said "We can get it somewhere else". This is a clear indication that the cheapest toothpaste was £4.00; maybe they were shopping in Borchester's Fortnum & Mason store.
No doubt certain senior member of the editorial team shop in such places what with four (plus?) month grace leave holidays.

Tayler - are E & E claiming housing benefit? Can you please find out?
Have the former 'power couple' (soon to be power cut off people) ever spent a few minutes at to find out what they may be entitled to?
Maybe the scripties all live at Ivory Towers (Council Tax Band H) so would have no idea about these things,

WE are not told whether they are on any kind of benefits ..
Even if they are these are so complex they may not be due much .
In any case they take a long time to "catch up". Don't they take into account the last year when they calculate them? It is only recently their income has gone down ..

PS I expect a good fairy will come to their rescue - viz Jims article will generate more customers for Mike which, in its turn will mean more income for Ed ..

We don't know if Ed and Emma are claiming any benefits.
I know that Tesco sell toothpaste that's over £4 - and it's possible that a small supermarket was badly stocked.

They do indeed Tayler.
Of the 117 varieties of toothpaste Tesco stock, 101 are £4 or less.
ALL the ones over that are speciality brands, mainly Sensodyne.
If you believe that a supermarket had no toothpaste other than Sensodyne you must be the Red Queen (or possibly the White Queen? Whichever one could believe six impossible things before breakfast)

Bunsoc the "evil" supermarkets provide perfectly adequate own brand toothpaste 25-40p per tube.
They really cannot be making a lot on that.
If people CHOOSE to pay more for a brand advertised on TV more fool them.
If the supermarkets did not exist and you could only get toothpaste from pharmacies do you thing it would cost more or less?

Why on earth would a couple on the verge of starvation go to a Small Poorly Stocked Supermarket rather than a big one with plenty of choice?

JPBS, OI, - can't be bothered to read further down-thread tho' it's a good one...(never really listen much to Ed'n'Emmur.) How much does a round trip to Bore-set-cher cost? Is there a Boots there? Well by chance I've just been to Boots - looking for special plasters ! While there I picked up some toothpaste .. I *did* see some at £4 a tube - it was a big tube and for strengthening enamel. I know the dentist recommended it for my daughter .. she'd been unknowingly cleaning her teeth too soon after fruit juice.
Some big tubes of fairly ordinary toothpaste were nearly £4 - not just the expensive brands. They swear they are better for your teeth - but who's to know?
I don't find it an inexpensive store at all TBH .. though as you say you do get the money on the card ..

Um, JPBS. I *swear* by Boots because of the card, vouchers, three for twos (but one must be ware of traps!.) It's just the cheapest one near us.
I suppose the point is that £4 - with no vouchers - seems exorbitant for Ambridge. Else-thread, I think - I DO wish I could remember who it was - somebody posted a list of very simple ideas about how E&E could live for very little indeed. I don't think money management is their forte. Yet they are surrounded by thrifty & caring family, rich (& often kind) employers. If I were E&E, I'd take all the advice I could get and anything William offered, for the sake of poor wee George and the knock-on effect for Keira. Hey-ho. exxers

Good grief is this argument still running?
Fwiw OH uses a toothpaste (ordinary tube, no pump action etc) that costs £5. It's the sort you use when you've brushed most of your enamel away and doesn't brush the rest off like Sensodyne which is an abrasive.
Also it was Ed who picked up the toothpaste in that gormless sort of way that happens in supermarkets and Em immediately rejected it. I really didn't see anything wrong in that as a SL device.
And back to EdnEm's poverty, the suggestions made were the sort of middle class suggestions (grow your own veg) that don't take account of EdnEm's situation or the fact that they have pride. The middle class tend to be a lot more confident than working class people which is probably why they get to be middle class in the first place.
And on top of all that they knew that Will would be crowing over them for failing to provide for the children. How right they were about that. But now he knows I just wish they'd get down to the local CAB (assuming it's not been closed) and the food bank.

Where everyone was barging around with 4 quid toothpastes in their trolleys.
As opposed to a Working Class Supermarket.
Where everyone was dragging their lardy arses around with um 4 quid toothpastes in their orange crates.

And even Sbry/tosca have very few, and lots cheaper.

Lots of assumptions there.
Wherever they went, the toothpaste Ed picked up (presumably the brand they've been buying in the past) can be bought more cheaply elsewhere.

Daughter had this type recommended by DEntist (the type not the brand).
I think the point of the story was Em keeping an eye on every item as to cost ..

True, JPBS, true. Having typed that, William and/or Nic *did* offer to have George over more - did they not - and Emmur was keen on that (for all their sakes) but Ed stuck his hoofs in. Full marks to Nic on this one! exxers
