concerning last nights programme, when Joe Swift was visiting the garden of trees, the poor man could hardly get a word in edgeways for the chattering of Joe. I thought the idea was to interview the gardener and listen to his reason for doing what he does, not to be overridden by the interviewer.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Monty, they need you!!!!!!
dont agree
I thought the same, Joe was going on and on and on..
Why don't you all video the programme and then you can whizz through the bits you find boring or irritating. Much better that way. I am going to Malvern on Sunday, and have not been before. As usual the programme on it was as it is with all garden shows that are televised. You have to see for yourself to get a true feeling about these shows. that is ,of course,if you are able to. if not enjoy what you can on the televised version. everyone can't be pleased.

As my Grannie used to say---

Hi
At least Gardeners World is at last showing some serious veg growing with Joe Swift's allotment.
I get seriously fed up with the team visiting some professional gardens which non of us could possibly eminate and usually owned by some excentric or millionaire person who appears to be a clone from the 1920's!
And Oh! - not the b...y Chelsea Flowere show again! What everyday person goes there anyway?
Most viewers have a tiny garden - if lucky an allotment - which they can hardly find time to maintain anyway. Or maybe a few tubs or window boxes.
As we used to maintain in the teaching profession:-
KEEP IT SIMPLE KEEP IT STUPID.

Who said most viewers have a tiny garden or a window box, and maybe an allotment. I have been watching Gardeners World for years and I have a large garden , am not filthy rich and can still learn from what I see on TV. If you are a teacher you shld have plenty of time for gardening.( I have just deletd what I wrote next) as I dont want to be moderated.

Whilst I'm on a role - LOL! ( geoff)
There used to be a brilliant gardening programme shown sadly in the afternoons ( when most people were at work?) I can't remember the channel it was on . It featured ORDINARY EVERYDAY PEOPLE working on their allotments growing flowers as well as veg.
The presenter used to visit the gardeners whilst they were at work, picking up tips as well as giving their professional input. A lovely balance of effect.
One lovely old lady gave her recipe for organic green and black fly control. Basically it was a spray made from boiled down tobacco which I might add I still use and is very effective.
Unfortunately I realised at the time that this was not very PC - or even I believe a lawfull practice? - thanks to EEC ruling. As expected, the series suddenly stopped without any explanation from the TV company who were probably reprimanded by the 'appropriate authorities'
Now that was a Gardeners World for ordinary everyday people.
Oh! and for those who might say " If you don't like Gardeners World as it is: dont watch it." I will but like another person said ' I record it and flick through the irrelevances.'
Enough is enough! - LOL!

I'm pleased you have a LARGE GARDEN. Most of us don't! - or if they do - they are too busy working to pay the mortgage to have any long time to work on it. Have you seen the size of gardens being supplied by the new house builders?
By the way, I was a teacher ( Facilitator) in the Met Police, and was taught by Surry University. So with all the shift work and teaching ......... I will leave the rest for you to work out for yourself my friend.
Many Thanks for your reply. It's discussions like this that I believe bring out the truth of us gardeners.

My comment to you was to emphasise that you shld not assume YOU know who are the majority Gardeners World watchers.I think there is a very mixed bag of keen watchers with gardens of varying sizes. My large garden takes a lot of hard work and well earned money to pay for help as incapacity prevents me doing as much as I wld like to do.I wld love a small garden or even a tiny yard. The one that Joe planted the jasmine in wld be great.I hope you are enjoying your retirement and enjoying good health.

Hi Geoff
I think you might want to rephrase that one....
better try "Keep it Simple Stupid"
Meaning don't make things more complicated than necessary, which is not quite the same as keeping things stupid.....
Although I'm not familiar with the educational principles in the UK....
Hi Imcoho,
Perhaps I should not have said tiny gardens but average gardens, you know the sort that are normally associated with the average three bedroom house built in the 30's. That's like mine. I have a small allotment area as well as flowers.
The large gardens I was making reference to are the 'estate show gardens' LARGE if not HUGE. These gardens, whilst I admit may be of interest to the minority of viewers, they cannot not be replicated by the rest of us and so my personal opinion is - what purpose does it achieve by Gardeners World showing us them? If people want to see these show pieces the can always visit them and as is nearly always the case - pay for the privelage.
Perhaps my personal idea of a really useful Gardening Programme is like the one I mentioned before. Ordinary folk being interviewed about their tips and practical gardening experiences - along in their gardens or on their allotments - with a shared response from the pro interviewing them. Perhaps much more of the Joe Swift allotment type presentation as he speaks to the other allotment holders.
Yes, we still want Monty, Alice and the rest of the team giving us their tips, as long as they continue to relate the type of practical gardening matters that we can all share in. And more time given to veg. You can't eat flowers and shrubs - LOL
Good gardening my friend

Hi William,
If you had some of the studens I did at times, the word Stupid as a stand alone word is correct - LOL!
Good gardening
