This applies to all "celebrities" but in order to keep "on topic" I shall restrict it to gardening presenters and gardeners on TV and in the media.

What can people do to resist the urge ( and doubtless the editing )to become characatures of themselves? It is not endearing, and often spoils enjoyment of a programme as one is waiting for the inevitable mannerisms to appear!

We have the "bluff and hearty" We had the "hair tossing and bosom jiggling" We have the "bloke down the pub" We have the "earnest uncle who always knows best" We have the "rebellious naughty schoolboy" We have the "manic,overenthusiasm"- the "bluff,no nonsense northerner" - the "we did it like this years ago and I have no truck with new fangled ideas" etc etc etc

I'm sure these people are very nice in "real life",very good at their jobs and totally sincere. How does this self parody arise and what can be done to curb it before it becomes toe curlingly embarrassing to watch?

What you are forgetting is that although you experience a one to one environment, in actual fact there is a production team standing there. Most people would 'freeze' in such an atmosphere, another enjoyable programme although a bit harsh on Rembrandt tulips. Berryfields has really developed some charm Monty there or not.

I agree, hereisabee (and am a poet and don't know it...) I think it is not an easy thing to do.

But Kernow Canna perhaps in 'real' life we also live up to caricatures of ourselves, which ultimately is just a general view that others might feedback about us, which we take on board a bit.

Maybe I'm missing something in your point but I don't really see why it matters if a northerner comes over as a northerner and so on. Maybe the presenters really do have the mannerisms they use. Life would be very dull if all the presenters were homogenized into having no mannerisms at all.
