I deceided not to "record" the lunchtime show for that very reason. What "authority" does she have for fronting a gardening show? Oh, a window-box?

Alan's hairdo? A centre-parting or hedged-clipped by Diarmuid Gavin - he of the clipped box balls.

Perhaps, Mrs Titchmarsh could persuade him to have a left parting next time

I like Nicki very much. She is elegant, not to dominant and she doesn´t wave her arms about as much as Carol Klein. I really think she is a perfect presenter for the occasion. I didn´t notice her nasal voice until now. Doesn´t bother me. Her pink dress (first day) was a bit odd at the back though...

I agree! Can't stand the woman! Even when she was on that talent show (can't even remember the name of it!) she drove me up the wall!
Mind you I'm amazed at the skill of the puppet master operating her you can't see any strings!
Oh that was so catty, not me at all sorry about that!

What frustrated me was you had all that footage of hugging, but they didn't make it clear what medals most of those people had got, or who they were and what garden it was.

Even the guy that read the letter saying he got judges choice best in show, I had to go onto the Chelsea website to actually figure out what category that was, who he was and which garden it was.

I was just wondering who on earth she was and whether she was qualified to do the job!

I think she was there to provide the glamour that Rachel presumably didn't have so much time to provide, and to be a People Person.

I was a bit bemused by Nicky presenting Chelsea, and wasn't ovely keen on her presenting style. And I agree with Pootles about the awards and not being sure which garden was awarded which medal (although I don't think it was Nicky's fault for this)! It would've been nice if they'd been clearer on who won what, particularly as they spent the most part of the programme on Sunday going on about the medals!

I'm sure there is a time and a place for Nicki Chapman but this wasn't it. Having her gush all over people whilst they were accepting their medals would have tarnished any gold! Ghastly. The Beeb seem to have cut down on the numbers of different people presenting Chelsea this year - wasn't Anne-Marie Powell doing it last year? She seems jolly and unaffected and knows about gardening so surely a more appropriate choice.

When she did that bit following the medal winners I was shouting "get out of the way woman" You could hardly work out which garden won what.

Now Carol K is a different matter i think she is a fantastic presenter her enthusiasm just spills out of her. more Carol for me

I think the presenters take a lot of flak around here for what are actually faults in the production. I don't think Nicki's the one we should be blaming for lack of information about medal winners - it's producers who choose how to edit the packages together.

It's my main beef that every year we have to put up with a presenter who knows nothing about gardening. Moira Stewart springs to mind. Would they have Alan Titchmarsh judging Strictly come dancing?

Yes judimac, I'm sure they would let AT, or at least his sideburns, judge Strictly Come Dancing. But to be fair Nicky C. wasn't judging, just presenting. Its just that I think we gardening sorts like calmer, more intelligent presenting and this year's choice seemed to be dumbing it down.

I think there is a myth amongst some of the TV execs that dragging in someone from a popular, people's choice, everyone-wants-to-be-a-star type programming will somehow bring in a new audience. I just think it turns off the existing audience.

So that's who that was! That whole segment did remind me of the worst days of Chelsea coverage – I seem to remember some fashionista with makeup that preceded her by several inches in a fluorescent yellow dress running around just like this segment but throughout most of the coverage one awful year.

If they wanted a people person to go around and do this, it really OUGHT to be someone who know the people involved, or at least some of them, and someone known by them. When Carol K does her red-button walkabouts you can tell how well she knows most of those people, the greetings are genuine, and she'd make perfectly sure you knew what had won what medal. Most of the people being approached by this Nicki woman clearly didn't know her from Eve, unsurprisingly, which I think helped make it embarrassing to watch. That's not entirely her fault (though she could have said no to a job that was clearly not going to enhance her profile, or at least made sure she said "oh you got a [whatever]" each time, which she didn't). It's a lousy production decision. Question: was is worse than Joe Swift in the fedora or not?

I agree - she is hopeless. The section she did the other day on the 12 year old girl flower arranger was embarrasing. She asked the girl what she liked at chelsea and the girl said the NAFAS Kaleidascope stand. And Nicky the Thicky said "Ooh what kind of a flower is that?" She kept talking about floristry, not flower arranging, which agreed the boundaries are a bit more blurred now than they used to be - to be fair to her though she was probably reading an autocue which some equally ignorant person had written for her. I'm sure it wouldn't bother most people, just the 200,000 flower arrangers out there!!

I agree with most of the posters on here. Nicki was not a suitable choice to present the Chelsea lunchtime shows. However, it was not her fault, it was typical of the current thinking of some television executives to have a "star" presenter as opposed to a knowledgeable gardener with presenting skills.
And give Nicki her due... they could have used Davina McCall..........aaarrgghh.

I had to smile when I read this. I had honestly never even heard of this 'star', and still have no idea what exactly her claim to stardom actually is. Are we talking young pretty female bimbo here, or a more mature intellectual 'Woman's Hour' type? What a sheltered life I lead.

I heard it too - only watching the flower arranging part because I find this aspect of Chelsea intriguing from a horrified fascination point of view. I like flowers naturalistic in vases and not tweaked to death.

Anyway, yes, why use a "star" when what you need is someone knowledgeable who can show us the real stars - plants, gardens and their producers/creators.

I agree that it was a bad choice to have Chapman presenting at Chelsea, hopefully they'll learn from their mistake! I was a bit frustrated with the coverage on the evening programmes, they seemed to show the same show gardens over and over again, I would rather have seen a bit of all of them rather than over extensive coverage on a select few. I must say I wasn't particularly fussed on a lot fo the show gardens. It's called the Chelsea FLOWER show and most of the gardens seemed to have a distinct lack of flowers to me! What did everybody else think? On another thread somebody asked what award the Jamaican stand in the Pavillion got, I also wondered the same thing. They did a feature on them one day and they never followed it up to tell you how they got on in the medal stakes, very frustrating. If you're going to do a feature and get people interested in something then please follow it up!

They don't learn from their mistakes. They've always preferred faces to content for the midday coverage. Nikki is just the latest.

As for the evening coverage - yes, each garden, big and small, should be shown in turn and have its merits discussed and have the plantings shown in focus but we've been asking for that for years......

Nikki Chapman was there in an attempt to lure in a different viewer I guess, than the gardener who will watch whoever is presenting - like me! Being a judge on one of the pop idol/xfactor whatever, shows, would maybe encourage new people to tune in. I'm not saying it worked, but I would suggest thats one of the reasons she was chosen. She is easy on the eye, unpretentious and would not be at all intimidating to new gardeners, having no illusions of being a gardener herself. Maybe, just maybe, she was chosen because she doesn't know about gardening and wouldn't pretend she did. She just likes a pretty garden.
