Ok so Im new to the boards and this will be the first time me and my partner will be going to the GW live.

Silly Question I know but has anyone who has been before got any good tips on what to take or what to do whilst there etc as this would be great as we are traveling from the North West and Im that excited that I don't want to have missed anything.

    Thanks again

Hello Twomoon and welcome to the boards. smiley - biggrin

The NEC can be rather expensive for food and drink so it's a good idea to bring a packed lunch. If you are a subscriber to GW make sure you bring your subscribers card as there is a subscribers lounge and various stands give discounts to subscribers too. The plant creche is very well run which means you don't have to cart your purchases around with you all day and you can leave anything there, not just plants. Make sure you wear comfy shoes as it can be very tiring. There are usually 4 halls containing food and drink, stuff for the home, and the gardening section. There is also a lot of stuff outside including the show gardens. If you have tickets to see anyone in the theatre, make sure you arrive in plenty of time for the talk to ensure getting a reasonable seat. Enjoy your day!

The following was my advice posted last year. 2007
    ****

    Wear comfy shoes.
Take thick shopping bags/ those bag for life canvas types are perfect...anything with a base & wide comfy handles.
    Take some water.
    Take lots of SMALL change.
Take every opportunity for a pee.
    Take a Camera.
    Take your time.
    Take small raincoat..not umbrella.

Avoid anywhere with a Celeb/Royal.. (the area becomes a standstill and/or a scrum.) unless your into that sort of thing.

(If you subscribe to Gardeners World Magazine TAKE YOUR GREEN SUBSCRIBER CARD so you can get discounts from some stalls. )

Take a pen and note pad for plant names

If you leave stuff at the Plant Creche remember it will take twice as long to get it back due to the Queues.

Take Spare seeds to seed swap,
    (It is on for 2008)!
and YES you can take commercial packets such as T&M, Mr Fothergills etc...

If your driving get there early, then you get parked nearer the NEC, which is nice if you have to take stuff back to your car, or if you want to fetch a picnic.

And finally as this year is yet again new set up with the Good Food thing and Homes bit, all of my advice might go out the window. So come on here after you have been and tell us what you bought, what you thought of it.

I'm going weds, when there are lots of plants still in stock for me to buy.

    All the best.

If you buy your tickets in advance on-line..put GWS into the code box when ordering and you will get a few quid off as an extra discount, but dont tell anybody I told you.

Make sure you take lots of cash, have comfy shoes on, take your own food and drink, a note book and pencil for tips from stall holders....oh and another lot of cash! Oh and if you have one, a DBH to carry all your stuff smiley - laugh

    Have a great day!

Just take food and drink. Dress comfortably. take a pac-a-mac. No umbrella,as they are a problem to other people if you have to put them up. The plant creche is a good idea but you usually have to queue to get plants out. Don't trundle one of those awful trolley things about as they are an absolute menace. But most of all enjoy it to the full. It's a great show.

I couldn't agree more. We take one with us but leave it in the creche to help carry everything back to the car at the end of the day, they are very useful for that but a menace when being dragged around the show all day.

I'd agree with all the other messages but would add that taking some painkillers would be a good idea too. My last experience of GW live was very hot and cramped. There was a scrum to look at all the exhibits, so many people, wheelchairs, pushchairs etc . Mind you it was on a Sunday. For a lot of the time I was looking for my other half rather than enjoying the plants etc as it was so easy to lose eachother . It was so stressful that I had what I would call a 10 out of 10 migraine. I've never felt inclined to go again even though it is a fantastic day out.
I hope that this hasn't put you off smiley - smiley

being close to the NEC we have been visiting for many years, for me it is the highlight of my year. However over the years the show has become very big and each year I always feel that I have not had my money's worth, in the early years it was possible to get round and see everything in one day. I now come home with the hope that the bits I have missed weren't very good. There is nothing worse than watching on Friday night and realising you didn't see the bit they show!!I could spend all day just looking arournd the floral marque. Each year I say perhaps we will give next year a miss (trains overcrowded, getting more expensive) then It is advertised and my neighbour says "are we going or not?" and guess what I have to say YES and I am always glad I have been!! nowt so queer as folk

Don't agree that you can't see everything . I have been going for several years now with a friend. We see all we want to as we know what we want to see and what we don't want to see. It's a great show and have not really found it a struggle with a crowd.

I'm going for the first time on the Saturday, and have read all the advice posted on here! The only thing I realy don't understand is 'take lots of small change'. Why?

Because everything is priced at ???.99p or ???.49p and the area is too large for them to keep running for change. I don't know why they don't just round things up (or down smiley - laugh to the nearest £!

Most stuff is priced up to the nearest pound or 50p. I haven't noticed stuff priced at 99p in all the years I've been going to GWL, and that's a good few!

My Advice is don't go and enjoy the peace and tranquility of other open Gardens as everyone will be at Gardenersworld Live... Only kidding, wish they did something further North as the cost to get there this year has trebled due to fuel costs, so I am afraid will not be partaking, this also includes my friends in the same boat, even sharing cars.

What about the Tatton Park Flower Show? Is that not further north than Gardeners World Live in Birmingham? Have been to Tatton about 5 times - ferry to Holyhead, drive to Chester for a long weekend and a day at the Flower Show - brilliant?
