Why dont we start a campaign to get Alan T back to present GW. Everyone was sad to see him go and we all enjoyed the slot last night- it was like seeing an old friend after a long time. Wonder if he is up for it? BRING BACK ALAN T.

A professional person shouldn't do a U turn and do whatever they were doing before they moved on in their career. Alan T has been presenting a variety of non-gardening related programmes since he left. Surely, this shows that he is a good presentor whatever he prsents. If anything, he should be asked (again) to do something entirely different. So its time somebody new, not necessarily young was brought in to present the GW.

I'm all for having Mr T back on GW! Last night's short flash back showed how much he's missed.

I'd be sorry if it meant him having to give up his Sunday evening Radio 2 show though, as I really enjoy it.

Whilst i admit part of me would like to see him back, I dont think it would be 'right' even if he could be persuaded (unlikely). I cannot see Alan at Berryfields at all. I will always asociate him with Barleywood 1997-2002.

I have a strong feeling we have already seen the new presenter, and I dont mean Carol, Joe or Alys. I think Toby Buckland's appearances are very significant and I have a hunch he might be being lined up for a permanent presenting role, even if Carol remains the 'main' or lead presenter for the foreseeable future. I seem to recall Monty doing a few guest appearances on the show before being announced as Alan's replacement.

I can also see the 'center' of the programme might shift away from Berryfields and the midlands down to Devon, considering that you would then have 2 presenters based in the county. I know this might upset northern veiwers but living 'next door' in Dorset I would be delighted at this development!

If the whole show moved to Devon, it would lose relevance to the rest of the country — everyone knows that Devon is about a month before the rest of us.

I suppose they could film and bank the programmes for a few weeks, but the nice thing about GW is its topicality... when they're filmed in the pouring rain, and you've been planting out brassicas in the same rain, you feel a connection with the programme.

AT won't come back. It was his choice to leave so he could do other things. I seem to recall Monty appeared with his chilli slots after being announced as the new presenter.

Berryfields seems like a good place to present from - being so far inland it is not too far ahead of the rest of the country but we are still left with the lack of "ownership" and the lack of follow up on so many projects - the shrubbery, the alpone bed and house, the slug experiments, the green garden, the stumpery and conifer garden.

It's all too bitty, unstructured and superficial even with the new and welcome tendency to let Carol speak in more detail about plant groups and families and habitats. Also, given the current economic squeeze which is affecting mortgage holders and families more than single households, the emphasis should definitely be more on economic gardening - seeds, cuttings, divisions, recycling - than what we see with Joe - throwing away that rosemary, spending £15 on a "throw away" jasmine and buying in comfery and so on for that parody of an allotment.

The integrity of the two main guest slots this week saved the programme for me. I'd like to see more and with a whole potentially wonderful hour to fill now there is plenty of scope for Matthew and Toby to present more such interesting pieces.

I doubt very much whether Alan T would want to come back to GW or whether the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú could afford him!

However, what we saw from the clip of Alan on Friday was something that has been missing from GW for a fair time on the whole. He explained step by step how to to do something, wiht an understanding that the viewwers at home would then go and do similar that week and know how.

Now they have an hour, why not 5 minutes worth of what most gardeners do every day?

A walk around the Berryfields garden to keep up to date... showing things that are at their best, identify things that need sorting, film them being sorted, the rest could be devoted to new projects and advice. If something has been a disappointment, have an expert spot to explain why. This way the programme would be relevant, topical and real.

It stands out a mile doesn't it?....it's just the way he says things!

Mind Carol did well with her propagation instructions. It's good to be reminded even though you may have seen/heard it many times before.

The penny drops. All these clips from old shows are for one purpose and one purpose only - for the producers to measure the reaction and current opinion and make their choice of new presenter with some help from the archives. It's not a case of bringing someone back, so much as reflecting on what was done well before and then trying to replicate it.

I would really like to see Matthew Wilson as the next presenter of Gardeners' World, but I know he has a very high powered job with the RHS so I don't think it can possibly happen. My second choice would be Chris Beardshaw - Very intellingent, knowledgeable (and sexy with it!)

I have been giving this some thought and have decided that my ideal presenting team would be Chris Beardshaw, Carol Klein and Toby Buckland. Chris is familiar with Berryfields so could be based there (effectively replacing Monty), Carol can go back to being based at or near home in Devon (as was the original plan at the start of this series), and Toby can do the fruit and veg stuff either from his garden or from the Berryfields veg plot.

I think now is the perfrct time to have a revamp of the presenting team, not only to replace Monty but Joe as well. Since starting his allotment his horticultural skills have totaly lost credibility for me. Maybe he could have his own show 'Joe's Plot' or something and leave the serious stuff to someone else!

For me it is actually quite nice as a relatively new veg gardener to watch the process of somone starting from scratch and to learn from their mistakes as well as their sucesses. We all have to start somwhere. Having an allotment, it would seem is all about trial and error, getting to know your plot and learning from others around you with a diverse range of experience.

I see bookmakers William Hills have made Chris Beardshaw 2/1 favorite to take over from Monty. The man himself says he would like to do it but hasnt been asked yet.

The Beeb seem to be keeping their cards very close to their chests about itand wont say anything about a new presenter at the moment. The 'status quo' will continue for the forseeable future it seems.

If Chris Beardshaw does want it, then he might be better keeping quiet rather than throwing down the gauntlet publicly and thus putting the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú on the back foot. They may also be chary of approaching him since he has proved to be something of a hothead in the past when things don't turn out his way (Silver Gilt at Chelsea last year, for instance).

Excellent gardener and presenter though - I'd be happy with him as long as Carol kept a significant propagation/plant selection spot for as long as she wants it.

I think the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú would be very stupid if they don't approach CB. He's failry local to teh area so access isn't a problem and Carol could go back to Devon and carry on as before with advice and projects in her own garden including all the lovely propagating.

As for CB himself, we know him to be broadly knowledgeable as a plantsman and designer and his experience as a lecturer stands him in good stead as a communicator and instructor. He's innovative but knows his garden history and basic techniques too. He even has a pleasant voice and clear diction.

I've never ever been bored by any slot he's done on GW and his Hidden Gardens and Flying Gardener series were inspirational and informative. More please.

If Chris Collins is the bookie's favourite, I'd better go and place a bet (if I knew how to do that smiley - erm). Surely not?!

Still, this gambling and gardening thing creates an interesting twist. Perhaps we could have some sort of gardening programme which includes gambling ("Will she open the box, or take the foxgloves?").

We could all bet on how many seedlings will survive the slugs, stuff like that. I foresee a whole new financial futures market riding on how many roses get black spot. The possibilities are endless. Or maybe rather limited.

Carol Klein in the natural choice to present G/W (providing she is willing).

She has the passion, enthusiasm, natural charm and she has a wealth of knowledge. Also, she isn't patronising. I'm afraid I always found Alan Titchmarsh to be very patronising towards his viewers. Carol Klein makes it seem a friendly wander round the garden with just you, the viewer and one learns such a lot along the way.

In many ways she reminds me of Geoff Hamilton who was a wonderful presenter but of course Carol has her own inimitable personality... she's great.

Just the same as a football team. Whenever the manager leaves everyone says "bring back Martin O'Neill" (that's a Leicester fan speaking, by the way).

No, let's move on and get someone new. There must be someone out there who has a strong personality, is a good leader, who will encourage us to grow good vegetables and and keep the garden looking pretty.
