For those of us temporarily deprived of GW, there's 'Tatton Park Flower Show' on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú2 on Thursday and Friday evening, at 8.30pm.

I note that once again it's presented by the usual suspects - Joe, Carol and Rachael. It's nice to see that they've not been 'laid off' with the demise of GW, and are still coining it in. Although I don't watch any of these 'Shows' myself nowadays, I have no great problem with them being covered. I do however object most strongly to them being presented as a replacement for Gardeners' World. We're getting pretty close to a situation whereby over the year, there are about as many 'Shows' and 'Specials' as there are GW's. Is plain old gardening not 'sexy' enough now for the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú? I note that even the promotional clips for Tatton are narrated by what sounds like a spaced-out, half-witted female whom I presume is trying to sound sexy. I suspect that even the most enthusiastic follower of the Shows will be getting a bit tired of it all - at least I hope so. For followers of Gardeners' World to stay hooked, there has to be continuity in the garden or allotment, and this has simply not been the case this year. No explanations - no apologies - no intelligence.

Me too - and it's about time the RHS woke up to the fact that the Beeb's coverage of their shows is not doing them many favours, making the shows appear elitist and the gardens expensive and unattainable and in many cases undesirable.

They should be demanding far higher standards of content and editing and better focus on plants and all the gardens.

Ha ha! Another great rant from Ken Smart. I'm with you too. I really enjoyed Tatton last year, loads to see, some lovely gardens and a great atmosphere (although I was lucky enough to see it before the rain came down). I do hope the TV coverage (and I do enjoy coverage of the shows) can convey just an iota of that this year - but I'm not holding my breath.

I couldn’t agree more. What I want from GW is not days of repetitious coverage from flower shows. Nor do I want one-hour specials followed by three weeks of snooker, football or the Proms. All I want is a dependable weekly half hour which comes along side to inspire and inform me, and which shows what is, or should be happening in the garden right now. If Gardeners’ Question Time can run without a break throughout the whole year, why cannot GW do the same – at least throughout spring, summer and autumn?

I haven't watched GW or any other 'filler' for weeks.I've totally lost interest in it since they overdosed us with Joe. Don't even set the video anymore. I've not renewed my GW subscription either.smiley - sadface

I'm with you nanaanna. No longer watch G.W. May video it but rarely watch it through. Find it totally boring and not at all satisfying. Used to love it. I also have not renewed my subscrition to G.W. Mag. I'd rather go to shows than watch them on t.v. The coverage is always the same, dull.

I happen to agree with Mr Smart...
but I do still hope that one day he will appear on these boards as
'hey man, i'm totally chilled and feeling so happy and mellow', instead of Mr. Grumpy.!!
I worry about him, you know.

It really is nice that you should worry about me, Nooj. I accept that I must come over as a curmudgeonly chap who is forever complaining, but this is only because I honestly believe that Gardeners' World (and TV in general) is heading in the wrong direction, and see no benefit in not saying so. Normally I'm regarded as a solid guy (I think) with a keen sense of humour, but feel that no purpose is served by pretending to be indifferent about things that infuriate or puzzle me. A perfect example of what sets me off if the new signature tune for Gardeners' World. There is absolutely nothing offensive about it, but for the life of me, I still can't work out why there was any need for change (particularly when I think of the many real imperfections currently afflicting this programme). I honestly still can't think 'how it goes', and much prefer the old original theme tune. Who on earth insisted that this was a priority? It was clearly a case of wishing to distance themselves from all that had gone before. Anyway, back to the main thrust of your message. I doubt if I'll ever use the word 'chilled' (unless referring to wine), but I'll try very hard to make it clear when posting, that I'm not just about to slash my wrists because of something that upsets me in GW - assuming of course that we ever see another Gardeners' World. Cheers.

Thanks Venus. Clearly you can see straight through me, though I honestly would be happy getting back to the days when there was less to moan about. At times it's frustration, because we can never access the people who actually make the decisions. We should also never lose sight of the fact that the great majority of viewers (those who have never heard of our Board) may well just love the programme the way it is (when it's actually on).

I wouldn't even call them rants, Ken. They are too well written and argued. I don't always agree but you often say what I am thinking in a much better way than I could! I end up with a smile!

That's enough praise now, we don't want you to lose your edge!

Ken, if you knew me you'd know that I have to worry about someone or something.
I just happened to have a vacancy and there you were!
And don't get me started on the new theme tune or I'll start exploding!
A perfectly lovely version which made me feel all relaxed and happy, turned into something that sounds like what they might have played in old holiday camps to make you all happy campers.
    Yours, less chilled now

I'll put my 2pennorth in now Ken. I am always glad to see a message from you, especially as you are not on as often as you used to be,as a lot of others aren't now. I mostly agree with what you say but there is one thing that gets up my nose and it's this thing about G.W.opening music. What on earth does it matter what is played, for me it is the content of the programme, which I hardly ever watch now, that counts. No matter what is played that's not going to be changed. There has been such an uproar over the music. I just can't get my head round it. Anyway keep coming back Ken. You're entertaining.

I think I've touched on your point in the past, Sheila. I accept that the signature tune doesn't make one iota of a difference to the content of the programme. However, I would argue that you should be asking why, if this actually is the case, that they should have spent so much time and money replacing the old historical one, when so many of us were having serious misgivings about the actual content of GW at this time. Bear in mind also that Monty gave it the big fanfare when it was first being thrust upon us. I think you would also accept that there is a huge amount of music which would not represent the gentle tranquility that a gardening programme should provide, so I suppose there has to be some thought given to the subject. Bear in mind also Sheila, that no-one has EVER complained about the signature tune in the past, and that in itself makes it a bewildering decision. However, it's too early in the morning to be girning. Catch up soon. Ken.

Take your point,Ken,re signature tune, and agree up to a point. However, it is here to stay,no matter how much grumbling goes on. How often does anything get changed when people get hot under the collar about something? Very rarely. The powers that be are a law unto themselves. May be I am getting more tolerant as I grow older !! Nice to have a chat again though.

Excellent, excellent points all. Its interesting to see we are all standing united on this. GW and GW mag are losing their core followers.

I will not be renewing my GW mag subscription, but I may be taking one out for the English Garden. Now that IS elitist, but frankly, I get more hours of pleasure reading that than the 5 minutes it takes me to read GW mag from cover to cover. And i'm not exagerating - it has that little content.

When are the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú going to wake up, and when is the RHS going to realise it would get better lifestyle kudos and coverage on a channel like more4...

I rather think the RHS is a bit late waking up to the power of TV coverage to promote its activities and aims and I also think it is just a bit naive about what that coverage should be and has maybe not been sufficiently precise or demanding in its contract for show coverage with the Beeb.

Perhaps those of us who are members need to write and tell them of our concerns since clearly it isn't getting us anywhere telling the Beeb their coverage is cr*p.

As for GW magazine it does take me a bit more than 5 minutes to read it as I do it last thing at night when falling asleep but there really isn't anything inspriring in there lately and those crafty projects at the beginning of each issue are just laughable. Also, as an EU reader, I cannot join in any of the reader trials or comments for some reason. So much for open boarders and no trade restrictions.

This afternoon I have had occasion to watch older GW shows with AT and they are just magical - clear camera shots and focus on the plant or activity in hand, measured explanations and descriptions of plants and jobs plus visits to gardens and nurseries where the owner/creator/gardener is allowed the time to show and explain their thinking and planting through the seasons. No gimmicks and no minor celebs or prima donnas. Brilliant.

I agree. I no longer watch GW, or watch the wretched show coverage - when will the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú understand that the RHS Shows Dept. couldn't care less about gardening? They are only interested in paying punters through the gate, not plants.
