I agree with nearly all the comments re GW and they do not need reiterating on this thread.
    BUT
I fear that the rot which has pervaded our favourite ( only!!) TV programme has also begun to eat away at GQT on the radio.
Time was, when both programmes were topical, relevant, interesting and informative. Now, the ills of GW are legion and GQT has become some sort of "entertainment show".
The questions are not varied, the panellists try to be humourous all the time and most questions entail the panel looking at dead bits of plants or pests ( not very helpful on radio programme!)
I speak as someone who came to gardening in middle age and someone from a background wher no family members were ever interested in gardening or growing anything. If I were in that position today ( stsrting out with enthusiasm but little else)I fear that I would get very little help from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.Ther have been 3 new cookery programmes in the schedules recently, but no new gardening ones are even in the pipeline. Could it be a conspiracy to get rid of gardening once and for all, or is it just further evidence of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú dumbing down?

You are absolutely right PWP - GQT at times is toe-curlingly awful, especially when there's an opportunity for a double-entendre. This doesn't happen when they do a potting shed edition where the questions are sent in by post/email.

I do know from standing up and talking to live audiences at talks that people like to be entertained and made to laugh a bit even if the subject is dry - it lifts the whole atmosphere. I'm not a natural entertainer but have learned the value of a bit of humour. So perhaps there is an irrestible pull to amuse a live audience even if this doesn't necessarily translate well across the airwaves.

I agree - the programmes from the potting shed are so much better balanced and informative. Perhaps I am being too picky, but it's not as if we have an abundance of gardening programmes on either TV or radio.By the way I loved your Tatton garden Trillium and Bob - superb smiley - smiley

Totally agree about GQT. It's like everyone wants to be a comedian except for Chris Beardshaw. And it isn't just for the invariably toe-curling "lite" question we get towards the end the quipping and guffawing goes on throughout the programme to the detriment of the actual answers. Sure there is room for some light-hearted humour but all this pratting about makes it feel like just another dumbed down Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú programme. I've pretty much given up bothering to listen.

Thank heavens for that feature on the legume family with CB and AS at the end of the last GQT. The rest was very lightweight.

While we're talking about GQT, have they ever mentioned their 'Northern Garden' they were supposed to be creating at Harlow Carr last year.

I've seen no evidence of it the last couple of times I've visited, and the last time I asked and was told that GQT "hadn't committed" to it.

So what was the point of getting CB and Bunny Guinness to design it and appear (from the sound effects) to be actually preparing it??

    smiley - erm

PS: I have missed a few editions so apologise if it has been mentioned. And if so, what did they say?

    Hello,
Having just managed to jump all the hurdles to get on to this message board, and the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú don't make that very easy, for a 'computer illiterate', oldie!
I think, everyone on here must be a 'young hurdler' as now at last I'm here, the first thing I read is about Chris B. He may be eye candy for the girls but Oh dear! please, NOT Chris Beardshaw, I can't hear him. His voice goes down & he mumbles the end of EVERY sentence!
He's supposed to be a presenter as well as a gardener!
And when are the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú going to recognise that there are disabled gardeners, just because they are not as mobile, it dosen't mean they have lost their love of gardening!!
After that moan, a very heartfelt thanks to Carol & Joe. I for one, think they are doing a fantastic job. The programmes are now truly 'fun' not 'manufactured entertainment.' In particular I eally enjoyed the programme last week. Made me laugh as it's how I have always gardened! [And tried to encourage others, in my little part of the world.] Like Carol's Alyse's, & Jo's gardens, I have NO planted straight lines and a wonderful garden full of flowers, with a little fruit & veg.
Although mine is a very small garden, for a few minutes last week, I had 10 butterflies here at one time. I call that a success!
