    Hi Alfie,

I think you may receive more replies to your query if you post it on the 'Garden clinic' board.

I have lots of the (tough) common male fern (dryopteris filix.mas.) in my garden and, from experience, I have found that the best time to divide them is Sept/Oct. It can be done right up until late spring, but I find that spring divisions tend to look rough for the first year. Lift the plant carefully. If you look at the rhizome you will be able to see where to divide the plant. Sometimes it is possible to separate younger plants from the parent by simply pulling them apart carefully. With older plants I find I often need to resort to a strong carving knife for the job. You may lose a few fronds from each plant, but as long as you do not damage the roots, both the parent plants and offspring should give you a good show next spring.

That's ok. I've got this huge fern that I just keep chopping bits off and now have various sized ferns (in pots) all round the garden.

This is the latest, in a 2in pot

Two on the wall, one on a pantile and other in half a tub

Large one that I whack pieces off, taken end May.

This one in a south-west corner, hardly sees light of day

This is in a wooden box with some marigolds.
