Some while back I said that it was only fair to give Toby Buckland the best of three tries before declaring him out.
Having watched two programmes I think it two strikes and in.
His first week he had obviously read the carping on the threads before he had even made the programmes and lay down his ground rules. He did quietly give his credentials for taking over as the lead which to me seemed quite adequate and also told us his objectives, taking it back to a young gardeners how to do it from scratch with some interests for the rest of us.
This week he went away from the expensive obelisks and fruit cages to cheap and cheerful, in the light of current events we are going to need a lot more of that.
I am interested in the greenhouse building for next week, I see the groundwork is set out as my very first greenhouse was. After a year or so of digging out and refreshing the borders, a big lad in a small greenhouse finds that difficult without something breaking, I filled it with pea gravel and used pots grow bags and a combination of bottomless pots on grow bags, the result good disease free tomato's etc. I carried this on to the large greenhouse I now own, nothing goes into the border as gravel is cleaner and I can always find room for the extra pot.
The programme has changed for the better though by no means perfect, we still have dodgy camera work and Joe not knowing his hay from his straw. I was glad to hear Alys at last admit that Berryfields does have frost pockets after denying it on this board..
I can put up with a much diluted GW that will not give me the up it once did but at least it does not raise the hackles as the last ones did.
    Frank.

The board seems to have got to a position where lots of people are opening threads on the same subject. Wouldn't it be possible to keep all these on one thread - I know some people like to make having their say prominent but it just gets tedious having to read so many threads about the same subject.

    Thanks

I would respectfully point out you do not have to read any of them. If it is so boring you should possible select your reading matter more carefully.
At times you need to read the dross to get to the gems.
You will of couse have noticed the "Hosts" often close long threads?
    Frank.

It is the height of self indulgence to open a whole new thread to express an opinion which fits into an existing and recently started thread.

As you haven't been around for a while you will not have noticed that the hosts have relaxed a bit and haven't closed a long thread in ages - but they have been known to close repetitive, redundant threads.

    Hi amazingscotslass,
Nice to be missed, I see I have only to put my name on paper for the woodwork to open.
I did read all the threads under the various headings, having marked my line in the sand some time back I could not see anything that covered all I wished to say so opened a thread for those in the know to pick up on.
The good thing being I have friends out there, the others I can handle with ease.
I was thinking of you all in the bad floods and wondering, being busy on the local history thread does not give me much time to come on here, (big sigh of relief from some).
My tomato's made it through and we are eating them with relish, the sweet peas were reasonable but not quite as good as hoped, the rest of the garden had a haircut this week as the bushes were more like trees so many bags of green waste to go. It has been a funny summer but then gardeners are always planning the next season anyway, we take it on the chin and move on.
Hope all went well with you.
    Frank.

I am rather taken aback by the tone of your message Reme. If you have read all the threads you will surely have noticed that various posters have requested that people don't keep opening new threads for the same topic and that the hosts have also asked posters to do the same.

I think your remarks about 'woodwork' and the general tone of your post are unpleasant and unjustified.

    Venus,
That is your opinion which you have every right to express as I have every right to express mine.
If each time my name goes on a posting and I am instantly rebuked by the same posters, I will return the compliment.
Here in the north we call a spade a spade and rules are made to be bent, I am sorry I cannot put my thoughts down in 1000 words that will not upset some one when six words will do the same job anyway.
I had read all the negative postings about the new presenter before he even did a programme which included some of my own worries about the way things were going on GW. I now think Tony Buckland is the right man for the job, as they say there is no going back.
Even an old gardener such as myself will learn something new each day and to my surprise in two programmes I have learnt something new.
As I have said before you do not have to read the postings and in my case if I see certain names come up I ignore the posting, we are all free to do the same, we have choices.
    Frank.

Another Northener here Frank I haven't been around for ages either - good to see you smiley - smiley - I saw last Friday's GW but I missed the week before. As a younger gardener I was in split minds but I don't feel qualified to comment too much having only seen one show with Toby. I did think that Berryfields straw looked strikingly similar to what I'd call Hay though smiley - smiley

    Hi Charly, Myacer, Amjo,
Still around but busy, Joan is not in good health, it adds to the load, I got full marks for the cooking when blood tests came up trumps.
Local History keeps me busy with pictures and stories my new Laptop is getting well hammered between jobs in the house and garden.
I do intend to go back onto the help page as the nights draw in, TV bores me, telling how to look after a lawn for the umpteenth time does not.
The garden despite the weather has done well and we are eating a second flush of strawberry's, all I did was clean them and give them a feed it worked. Tomato's are ripening by the truck load so again this year I missed the blight that took a lot of plants.
Myacer you will know what it has been like weather wise living close, although we had a flooded garden a couple of times did not set it back, living on top of a hill helps.
I think GW is as good as we will get with Toby, he has an easy way of doing things which is how I like to do them.
Enjoy our Indian summer, sunshine all day today.
    Frank.

    Welcome Mcspanna,
I was pleasantly surprised the first week but held comment until I saw another GW. I like the way Toby works, gardening has to be fun as well as hard work.
I see he is doing things from scratch which for the flush of young gardeners is what was needed.
I have seats in odd parts so I can sit with a drink and look between jobs, sitting and looking is as much of a garden tool as the spade, you see it all afresh and can plan ahead to fill that space move that plant, "oh" and watch the bees and butterflies, we have had hundreds this year a lovely sight.
You were right the straw was bunny hay well we all make mistakes says he who will be moving two plants in the wrong place tomorrow.
    Frank.

Hello Frank, nice to hear from you. I'm sorry Joan isn't doing so well.

I have enjoyed both episodes with Toby taking the lead. I did like Monty and also enjoy Carol's contributions. I think Toby will settle in well, he has a similar manner to Geoff Hamilton & Alan Titchmarsh imo. smiley - smiley Time will tell.

I enjoyed the 1st episode best as I am not into mass bedding plants and I didnt think there was enough of Carol. But then I am not the only viewer so some people wld have enjoyed and thats what its all about, a bit for everyone.
What are you all planting in your veg beds for winter apart from salads.
another sunny day forecast for today, I hope to sort out my pots and take more cuttings. smiley - cool

    Hello,

I am going to close this thread as we are trying to minimise the amount of duplicate threads on the board.

Please feel free to copy and paste your posts about Gardeners' World on an already existing thread.

    Many thanks

Please forgive me if I am repeating as I am new to this board today.
I am a novice gardener, just got started properly this year in my first real garden. However, I've done an awful lot of reading and have done a LOT out there.
As a novice, I was pleased to see Toby's back to basics approach, and I have enjoyed the programmes and learned something (although even I have thought 'well doh, anyone knows that' at various points.
I'd like to see a litte more for experienced gardeners.
I'd also like to see more close-ups of the projects and the finished results. In other words, we just don't get the amount of detail and variety I'd like to see.
And there's only one way to deal with that...a one hour gardening programme every day! In case anyone at the Beeb wants to take me up, 6.30-7.30pm would suit me so I can watch while cooking dinner ; )
