What a shame.. I wouldn't be too hard on Chris though - I think everyone else who has met him has found him unfailingly charming. Either that or they are too scared that they will be torn apart by his devoted fans to say so.
If he had his baby with him he might have been worrying about her or just distracted by something else. Most of these people are human.
Having seen how CB was at Shrewsbury Flower Show both doing talks to groups - one of adults and one of children - and how he was with all the people who descended on him to get books signed and ask questions he was nothing less than friendly and concerned.
I would think in this instance he was just distracted. Maybe his daughter was unwell?
I think anyone would find a one year old distracting and, as others have said, I have found him to be polite, charming and very open to access from Joe public. We all have off days though.
At Chelsea he was standing at the front of his garden and happily talking to anyone who wanted his attention.
My friend accused me of knocking over several old ladies in my rush to get my piece of the action!
She also pointed out that he was the only designer facing the crowds, all the others had turned their backs and were avoiding any contact.
As others have said - it must have been an off day!
If you think that was rude, you should have heard Anthony Worrel Thompson at Good Food last year! Boy was he foul! Chris B always seems very happy to chat, when I was at Chelsea he had a swarm of ladies buzzing around him and he seemed quite happy . My guess is his mind was elsewhere......maybe he was looking for his wife to take their daughter so he could get on with what he was supposed to be doing but she was thinking 'yeahhey' no kids.........what can I buy!!!!!!'. We all know how it goes

HI Starchaster
Sorry to hear your friend was disappaointed with CB's response. I have met him several times (never bought a book for him to sign and never been disappointed) and on each occasion he was approachable, friendly and happy to give advice. The only problem I've had is that I was too tongue tied to talk to him!
Did he know she had won the book?
Did your friend try to talk to him?
As others have said perhaps he had other things on his mind and with a 1 yr old to contend with they do sort of take over your life! Just holding her must have made it difficult to sign the book.
Your friend could always email him via his website explaining her disappointment. She may get a personal response - you never know.

I stood next to Des Lynam once in a pub.
I made Shelley Winter's bed when she stayed at Gleneagles Hotel .
Well, I got CB's autograph at Chelsea and a couple of days later saw bonkers Bill Bailey having a coffee in Chiswick and got his autograph for a friend who loves him and I once saw Chris Evert getting into a taxi!
Oh, and I saw Claudia Schiffer in a pizza place in Notting Hill! Totally unrecognisable, only confirmed when one of our party asked the waitress
if the tall blonde in the duffle coat was CS!

I have met CB, starchaser. He was demonstrating using compost to plant up pots at our local Notcutts. His manner is fairly serious and when I plucked up courage to ask for his autograph, I told him that lots of people on the GW messgae boards missed him in the weekly programme. A bit of a barrier seemed to come up and he said he never read the message boards. He doesn't seem to smile as much these days - I hope he's not depressed...
CB seemed chirpy enough at Shrewsbury Show a couple of months ago and was wowing young and old with the talks he gave. He did look a bit tired when off stage but isn't that the natural state of a parent with young children.

He has 3 small children,a partner and ex to support,a hectic career and a new house / garden - I'd be surperised if he weren't bl***y kna****ed!!
He looked fine ( but tired ) on Monday evening and spoke very professionally. He was also totally approacable as was Anne Swithinbank - bot a credit to their ilk
I sang the theme to Wurzel Gummage with John Pertwee in a bar on Paxos................yes we were VERY drunk!
PS.....He's lovely

I have met Chris Beardshaw on many occasions and he has always been so approachable and always keen to talk. He has looked as though he is genuinely interested and has been happy to sign autographs and have photos taken. On one occasion at the Malvern Spring Show he even said hello to my daughter on my mobile phone.
However, I am usually very tongue-tied, much more so than Mary Poppins who was chatting away very confidently to him when we met him last time.
We are going to see him again on Thursday evening in Leamington Spa where he is talking for the NCCPG. We can't wait!
Sorry you have had a disappointing experience, but I can only think that he was rather distracted.

Hi GB
Believe me it is all a front. I might appear confident but inside I am like a jelly.
Hasn't that come round quick. Can't believe it's this week. You're right I can't wait. Will have to try and finish work early.
I daresay we'll give a full report on here won't we?
See you then.

I can only echo most of these posts; I've "met" CB three times - the first was on a Red Letter Day which was a pressie for a special birthday; he was great, signed autographs and had his piccie taken, although I was disappointed when he disappeared while we were having lunch!!!! the second occasion was at GW Live, when I took one of said piccies, and he signed it, and recognised where it was taken (no, he didn't recognise me hahaha!!), and asked had I enjoyed the day etc etc. The 3rd time was at our local Wyevale, where he was doing the compost talk, and again, he seemed very relaxed and happy to chat and answer questions. On a separate note, he has a new series coming out this November... On the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú!! Perhaps they have forgiven him for defecting?

Wow! can't wait until November. What is his new programme called and when will it be screened?
Anyone any ideas?
It's called 'Wild about your Garden' and will be presented by Nick Knowles.
No dates yet that I can find.

I think I'd be kinda freaked out if someone I'd never met before came up and gave me a poem.
It's a nice sentiment, but as you say, you don't know what was written so it may have freaked him out as well.
Given the number of faces he sees at public events and how open he is to chatting with these complete strangers, I think it's a bit much to expect him to remember every individual he's ever spoken to.

I'm feeling really sorry for the poor man! All these strange people giving him poems and stalking him! He probably phoned security shortly after the poem incident!

I think you and your WUM friends - or maybe there is just one of you because it would be bad news for 3 people to be that dim witted - should find somewhere else to go and play.
Like a busy roundabout!
I have to defend the poor chap!
As I have previously stated, he has always been nothing but professional, yet charming, whenever I have met him.

Hey, that's a bit much for your first post. Why don't you go and stand on the beach and wait for the tide to come in.
