A part of GW giving names and varieties for berry plants for birds would be good. Here in North Cumbria from early November 2008 we have had an invasion of waxwings from scandinavia. There have been flocks of up to 200 of the waxwings feeding mainly on rowan berries in our village. I know that they love Sorbus Joseph Rock (a rowan with yellow berries)and they have also been feeding on rowans with much larger red berries than normal. They also favour holly berries and will feed on hawthorn berries only when the rowan has been depleted. They also spent around 1 week feeding on a planting of malus (crab apples) with very small yellow fruits. Some crab apples they will not touch.
I enjoy wildlife photography and wish to attract the waxwings into my garden and want to plant some trees and shrubs to attract waxwings and winter thrushes. If anyone can tell me of any specific garden varieties of malus (crab apple), sorbus (rowan) or cotoneaster or any other types of tree or shrub which these birds prefer I would be extremely grateful.
Here are a few of my waxwing photos
Thanks in advance
Dave

Only time I've ever seen Waxwings around West Yorkshire was Dec 04,something to do with the weather that year.
They came and stripped our Rowan and then moved on,I felt a little sorry for the Finches though, because they usually get the berries.

I live in North Surrey and only once saw a flock of them in the Rowan tree in our road. They were beautiful, I couldnt stop looking at them.
