Is there any zone on TV which does not include a self-congratulatory message from the Government, or a finger-wagging admonition about what we must not do from a self-appointed group of "experts". Peat-free is not without reasonable challenge. I'm with Peter Seabrook on this. How does digging peat back into the earth release carbon? This was not made clear to me at all. Do we have to believe it just because the environmentalists say so? There are many more damaging activities than this and since when could gardeners not read information on compost packaging? Please don't patronize us. For the purpose of information, I mostly make my own compost!!
I find the entire obsession (and that is what it is) with global warming very depressing. We are told by archaeolgists that the Earth has gone through warm and cold periods many times in the past. What about the last ice age 10,000 years ago. Was that global warming? NO!
Perhaps the government could investigate a way of preventing volcanoes from belching billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year or maybe of a way to stop cows from breaking wind.
I will continue to go my own sweet way and use peat free compost or whatever I feel is the best for the present situation.
How does digging peat back into the earth release carbon?Â
Carbon is stored in the peat, when the peat desintegrates this carbon is released. The same principle applies when you fell a tree. A live tree is like a carbond container, felling it destroys the conbtainer releasing the carbon (slowly)
Felling trees / using peat (digging it up) speeds up this proces.
