When i was watching Gardener's World on Friday 10th April Toby and Alys were talking about this subject. I wondered if i heard them wrong, but i thought Toby mentioned that when the spuds show a few inches you cover them with more compost and keep repeating this til the bags are full then wait til its time to harvest.

I thought that when they start to show, you just build the compost around the stems and keep a bit of the shoots showing.

Please put me right, as this is only the second time i have grown them.
Thanks, i look forward to hearing from you experts on this subject.

It was Alys who was doing the 'bag' potatoes....Toby was planting them in the open ground.
Alys was advising to cover the potatoes with compost each time they surface and continue to do this until the bag is full.

People do vary in the way they do this. I have always covered up the shoots completely when they get about 6 inches high some people just pull the soil up around the shoots. Naturally I think my way is the best but I guess it really makes little difference

My OH decided to grow potatoes in a sack of compost last year. As I remember he planted them at varying levels in the compost and then left it outside the back window. Several months later it was impossible to see out of the window for potato plants! I think he harvested all of about 5 or 6 potatoes out of it.

Had the piece on GW not been so irritating with the banter I think there may have been some good advice there about how to do it properly.

We always cover the whole lot each time, hubby did this on Sunday and this morning they're peeping though again! Have done it this way for three years now and always get a good crop.
