OK the trillum shown was lovely but what type of soil do they prefer. Quite a few of us are on heavy clay and Gardener's World rarely mention preferred soil type. For instance, Mecanopsis definitely prefer lime-free soil.
Another good point - I am embarrassed to say that I was shouting at Mathew Wilson to state that the meconopsis was not worth buying unless one had the correct soil conditions for it - and ditto that magnificent and very expensive trillium.
How sad!! I know I should 'get a life' but I love my gardening life too much
I've grown both Trilliums and the himalayan blue poppies with some success here in the north west.
Both do fine in dappled shade under deciduous trees. My soil is heavier here than at my last house which was acid sand. It's nearer neutral here, and more clayey, but with a high humus content.
Carol's point about leaf mould is the key. Open up the soil around the planting area and mix in loads of leaf mould and nothing else. Water in and leave for about 5 years.....
They do best in cool conditions - the Meconopsis society is based in Scotland by way of a clue.
As for the meconopsis if you don't have the right soil conditions you can grow them in 10 ltr or bigger pots
At our previous house we had no water butt on the greenhouse and the meconopsis were planted either side where the water fell. They did really well.
Does anyone know where you can buy trilliums. I couldn't find anything on the internet.
