Monty Don To Make Comeback With Channel 4
Monty Don is to front a new Channel 4 series about people trying to set up their own rural smallholding. Called My Dream Farm, the 6 x 60 minute series is being produced by Betty. It is the first series Don has been involved with since he took a break from TV after suffering a minor stroke.
The show is about people who give up high-powered jobs to live the rural dream. Betty, which also made Country House Rescue, calls it "an exciting project that encapsulates the nation’s interest in issues such as self sufficiency, the origins of our food and the achievability of a lifestyle choice that nurtures the soul as well as the bank balance."
Filming is taking place now and runs until Autumn 2009 - with transmission set for spring 2010. The series was greenlit by C4 deputy head of features Walter Iuzzolino.

Well it will be great to see Monty back on telly but I think I would have preferred a different format.
The excellent 'Fork to Fork' takes some beating.
How exciting! Something to look forward to at last!!! I'd have preferred a more general gardening show myself but beggars can't be choosers
Has he given up with the group of people with Drug addictions then..??
That is great news, shame it's not on until spring 2010 but something to look forward to.
Yeeeeessssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!
Watch this thread get closed down...
But do I care? Do I heck! The best news I've had since Wednesday.
what happened on Wednesday? Did I miss something?
Great something and more importantly someone to watch who knows what they are talking about and is not patronizing.Good luck Monty.
I like the sound of that.
Monty Don - not patronising???? that'd be some transformation
What happened to his "social experiment" with the under priviledged?
Thought he was going to concentrate on his own garden and family?
Come on Channel 4 - let's have a proper gardening programme - preferably with Chris Beardshaw or some other equally knowledgeable Properly Qualified Gardener
Sorry - that was rude of me.
We must be grateful for any programmes even vaguely to do with gardening - perhaps it will encourage Channel 4 to get back into the genre

The Gurkha vote. Absolutely Fabulous!
oh yes, now I see... yes, splendid outcome
thought you meant something garden-related
I could happily watch Monty any time, but on the face of it this new programme does sound like a waste of his gardening talent.
Monty bought a small holding in Wales a few years ago, and this, coupled with his presidency of the Soil Association, is more likely to be his major interest.
At least he's not hosting an afternoon chat show like some. Onwards and upwards, that's my boy!
YESSSSssssssssssssssssssss
The VERY best news indeed
Gardening and smallholding go hand in hand in my book so, roll on Spring 2010
Wonderful Channel 4 to the resue
My husband and Monty have much in common.
Similar age. Dark curly hair. Rugged conplexion.
There the similarity stops. My husband's has no money, doesn't drive a big car, hasn't written best selling books. Not appeared on one of the UKs best TV Programmes. He's not a gardener, but he does have a small holding.
Snap. My husband (on his good days — miaouw) looks quite like Monty and both went to Cambridge, but there the similarity ends... every time I make a new bed in the garden, he groans, "More weeding..." although he never does any.
He mows the grass — and that's it. Once a month he does a progress around the garden commenting favourably on anything he's planted, but completely ignores whatever I've put in. It must be love.

My husband looks like Matthew Biggs.
Always the same isn't it.. you want a Beardshaw you get a Biggs.
But doesn't he write for the Daily Mail?
Never been one for sticking to his principles that lad!
Ching! £££ Ching! £££
Harry
Looking forward to seeing Monty in action again
AX
My misses is like Monty too.
About the same age. Dark curly hair. Rugged complexion.
There the similarity stops too. Monty is far more pleasing to the eye, and I only had to listen to him once a week.
I am really looking forward to this new series and seeing Monty Don on TV again.
I guess it is not an entirely new concept since Escape to River Cottage started the trend, but full marks to Channel 4 and Betty.
The best gardening news this year!
FANTASTIC NEWS, Monty and small holding - what could be better. I am so looking forward to next spring.
I am glad to see Monty is well and doing TV work again. Great news
Wonderful news, Monty. Great to hear you'll be back on our TV screens by next Spring.
But can I wait until next Spring?? I will just have to console myself with your new book out in October!!
Take care and don't overdo it. x
new book? excellent
Monty + small-holding =
Is it just mainly us ladies on here?!
Its great news about Montys new programme and I'm particularly looking forward to his new book - I've had a little nosy on the internet about it, and it sounds like it will a very personal book about his garden in a similar vein to his book The Jewel Garden; and will be called the Ivington Diaries.
And if that wasnt good enough just to brighten things up even further Matthew Wilson has his own series this year on CH4 thanks to SaveGW for mentioning that on another thread.
happy days ahead.
ah, dear Matthew
I think we should have a thread dedicated to wonderful manly gardeners
The best description I ever heard for monty was that he had a face like a worn boxing glove.
Be nice to see him back on the box
Lucky UK viewers! Here on the continent we're restricted to live Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú broadcasts and no iplayer access.
Still thoroughly enjoy watching 'Around the world in 80 gardens'.
Wish there was a spot for him on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.
