    Gardener's world special - For Peat's Sake

Brilliant subject to tackle. Finally something a bit controversial and having some of the harder discussions that need to be had.

Apart from TB rolling up to the peat conservation place in a gas guzzling Range Rover (that didn't strike the production team as a contradiction?) I thought it was well covered. Talking to conservationists, 'iconic' gardeners, scientists and hearing about his own struggles with it made for an informative program that clearly showed the viewpoints and difficult nature of the topic.

Made me realise I can do more to be proactive about what I buy, starting with reading the compost labeling and not buying it if it's contents is not clearly labeled!

More of this type of garedning information please

    Gas-guzzling Range Rover?

Not if they're using bio-diesel — it's carbon neutral i.e. the carbon absorbed by growing the crop is about the same as that emitted by burning it in the car engine. Next to our house are 3 x 10 acre fields all growing an oilseed rape crop which has already been sold to make German bio-diesel.

Even if it was using bio-diesel, that's not necessarily a good thing - using agricultural land for growing fuel instead of growing food is a potential huge problem world-wide. Plus what is sold as biodiesel isn't always 100% biodiesel IIRC.
