Now that we are allowed to comment on radio gardening shows as well, let me rant about the travesty that is now the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio Solent gardening programme!

For years there was an outstanding show on twice at weekends, called 'Top Soil'. It lasted an hour and featured a phone-in on Saturday lunch-time and a letters/emails show on Sundays. The experts on there were always superb and included people like Andy McIndoe from Hilliers in Romsey and Brian Kidd, who was in charge of the Parks department in Portsmouth for years. (I believe his son is now in charge of Ventnor Botanic Garden.) It was more like the GQT format, but it worked well and was very popular.

Radio Solent had a reputation for catering for an older audience and had a 'rebranding' fit a couple of years ago. 'Top Soil' disappeared, to be replaced by a travesty of a gardening show once on a Sunday lunch-time. Time for gardening queries and features is now cut right down because of the inclusion of music for an uncertain target-audience. Worst of all, Georgina Windsor is the most irritating presenter I have ever listened to! If ever the seasoned GW despairers want to do some hard-core moaning, give this woman a few minutes of your time! For months she bored listeners every few minutes telling them about her pregnancy - as if she was the only woman ever to be up the duff. Now that the baby's born and she's back to work, she goes on and on about how marvelous her child is, instead. She also dominates the gardening experts by asking for lots of advice about her own garden. I'm sure I wasn't the only person to heave a sigh of relief when she went off on maternity leave.

Former experts Andy McIndoe and Brian Kidd are still on - about once a month each - but they now answer very few queries. It is such a waste of their expertise. I grew up listening to 'Top Soil' and learned many of my gardening skills from the experts. I was not alone among 'young' listeners to tune in specially for 'Top Soil' and did not resent the appeal for older people the rest of the time. There are plenty of 'young' stations down on the south coast. Now the station doesn't seem to know who it's target audience is and has managed to irritate just about everyone!

You're going to ask me why I listen, when it's so awful? Unfortunately I find myself at my mother's quite often on a Sunday lunch-time and she's a Brian Kidd fan!

the message "if it a'int broken don't fix it" just doesn't get through does it! Our local radio station also has a good gardening programme on a Sunday lunchtime which is good for multi-tasking now we can garden and cook at the same time!!
Guess it is her first baby, the novelty will soon wear off after two or three!! I always think God gets his (or Her!) revenge on smug parents, the next one is always a monster I speak from experience (first an angelsmiley - loveblush second a loveable devilsmiley - devil)

FellowCuckoo you have my deepest sympathy.

My OH and I have always thought that the presenter on our local radio garden phone-in was poor. She has yet to get the 'gardening bug' having only recently moved from a flat to a cottage in the country but she does like her food so one week she is tucking into lemon drizzle cake on air and the next week she tells us every ten minutes that she is on a diet.

She also likes to 'liven things up' by having occasional themes - when it was Chinese New Year everyone who phoned in was told what their Chinese zodiac sign was and what the traits of that particular animal sign were.

Having read your post, I think we should count our blessings.

    Hi

We have Margaret Thrower (Percy's daughter) answering listeners' phone-ins on our local radio station (Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú WM) on Friday lunchtimes and she's barely on for an hour but the time flies by. She's knowledgeable, funny, interesting and seems a lovely person.

We don't get to hear her personal woes/life story, just good, old-fashioned down-to-earth advice.

Lucky I live in the Midlands!
