It is with some dismay that I have found so many negative and outdated comments regarding the current GW. As a first time user, I thought true gardeners would be a little more tolerant and easy-going than the rants and raves of people who obviously have too much time on their hands and who should perhaps stay away from new fangled stuff like computers and other 21st century things?!
I find the new GW modern and informative without being patronising and lordofthemanor ish. As a mature gardener who has watched GW from Geoff's time, I find the banter and humour (heaven's above, are Toby and crew to stay po-faced for the hour!) a nice touch. The fact that it is magazine style is no bad thing, after all should we not be encouraging a new and younger generation to gardening??
Long time gardeners have seen a lot of this stuff before but sometimes there can be a new and improved way of doing things, I think the current programme is more appealing to a wider and perhaps younger audience. The simple fact is that very few of us have an acre or more to garden or the heavy expense of maintaining same, so showing what can be done on a budget and with a smaller space can only be a good thing.
I must also comment on the good professor Stefan, and his hissy comments about the gimmicky approach on GW, this from someone who is never seen without a pseudo intellectual BOWTIE, if thats not gimmickly, what is??!!!!!!!

Why are negative comments outdated? Is this because you say so? I don't regard opposing a deliberate downgrading of a formerly much-loved programme as either negative or outdated. Indeed, I honestly think that it's offensive to 'dumb' for an audience which should be educated by the state broadcaster. The probability is, that it is the production team who have difficulty with big words and sensible delivery, and therefore are quite incapable of producing a programme of any quality. Once we're finished with our MP's, perhaps we should concentrate on the travesty that is the current Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.

As this is your first post I guess you might be part of the production team. Only joking!!!!
Whilst trying to record Chelsea tonight I had to delete some stuff off one of the HD recorders and have every GW on that one since about 2006, and Chelsea etc.
We have just watched GW for this week from 2006 & 2007 and it was a damned sight better than the one shown on Friday night. Just go back and WATCH the same week for the past 20 years and I defy you to say that Friday nights rubbish is better.
I just hope C4 produce a decent program soon.
I just wish the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú would show Beechgrove on the red button interactive on Friday night at the same time as GW I know which one I would watch.

I really can't see the point of this thread, other than to be provocative.
You describe yourself as 'a mature gardener who has watched GW from Geoff's time' then go on to complain about 'the rants and raves of people who obviously have too much time on their hands and who should perhaps stay away from new fangled stuff like computers and other 21st century things?!'....you don't add up!
I would suggest that if you are finding the present GW 'improved & informative', something is lacking in your knowledge of the subject.

Well, you said it - maybe you should take your own advice!!!
I'll never understand why some people get upset that others don't like a programme that they do like, and feel the need to defend it by attacking other message board users.
Doesn't make any sense to me at all!!

Holbert, I think the reason people do it is because they are not confident in themselves and their own beliefs and seek confirmation from others agreeing with them to know that they are right. When they don't get that confirmation they become agitated.
As for me - I am just always right, even when I'm not.

Carmen, you know the old joke
"when I married Miss. Wright I didn't know her first name was always!!" thought it only applied to me.
Do you use the old get out line "because I am your mother that's why" my family say I always fall back on that one when I have lost the argument but can't stand to lose the battle!!

Whilst I took issue with the sentiments expressed in the original message, I'm completely at a loss as to why it's now been 'hidden'. It's strange to note that, as the quality of TV programmes spiral ever downwards, the standards of moderation on the Board seems to get ever more draconian. I recall that years ago it was a rarity to have any message removed, and now it's become almost a daily occurrence. Curiouser and curiouser.

Hi Ken!
Whilst I would not as a rule defend the ways these boards are policed, but in fairness it has to be said that in view of the fact they are reactively moderated, most probably the original message has been temporarily withdrawn as a result of someone making a complaint.
Link to this forum: Are we gardening in the 21st century or what???!!!
I don't think the original message was OTT. I have written worse on this message board. I think someone must have objected to the "ageist" tone of the message.
The Messageboard contributors are increasingly put in two corners. In the blue, the "ageists", who like the new format; in the red, the "patronisers", who defend the orthodoxy.
I find the "foetus with a trowel" a much more tasteless contribution, but it is apparently not against the house rules.

Hi all - as David says, it's not just moderators who remove messages. The complaint button is there for all to use and refer comments to the mods who make the decision whether to uphold it or not, consulting with Hosts where necessary. GH

Ken & David
Not sure if it was a complaint. When I see postings like this I tend to have a look at what else the person has posted. Guess what this one was a first post. And presumably had to be released by a mod?
I would suspect that they the 'mods' should be looking at the IP addresses that are being used.
There was another thread later using another tag that looked suspect as well.

Last week I listened to a work colleague, a classical organist / church warden, getting ever so worked up by a move by the new curate to introduce a more modern feel to services to attract the young, with what my colleague described as 'happy clappy music' instead of good old Purcell, Handel etc.. He fought bravely against it, even said he would resign if the new policy was adopted by the parish Committee. Now he HAS resigned, and will play the organ in another church of a different denomination.
It reminded me so much of the issue that is vexing so many traditionalists on these boards.
I am not saying that the traditionalists don't have a very good argument, it's just that I think the tide is running against them, and it is painful to observe.

foetus with a trowel stands and is relevant. i am still green at this gardening lark ( first planted something when i was 5 or 6- well over 20 years ago) the point i was trying to make is this. challenge me! make me think, just for a little while, make me learn , to find out . we all should be learning from g w . i want to be confronted by something new or at least from a different angle. why do i keep watching? because i am hoping. for something that blows my mind and makes me jump up! and punch the air with joy and enthusiasm. so far this series only carol has come close to that. which is why i adore her. i am not an idiot or a foetus, so please gw , do not treat me as such. have faith in your viewers . we will be ok if you challenge us. we will find out.

OTT shock language is a poor substitute for cogent argument. The words 'child' or baby' would have served just as well. I for one can do without this sort of language, but if it's ok then can we also use 'geriatric' to desribe elderly gardeners. How does that feel?
