It was really refreshing after some of the recent Gardener's World programmes to have some intelligent discussion and commentary. Please Carol calm down and learn from Alan how to talk to your audience, unbridled enthusiasm can be very grating
Very nice to see Alan on a gardening program on TV.
It was like putting a comfortable pair of shoes on or having a cup of tea in the morning.
Yes I totally agree and whats more we get a whole week of it................big sloppy kiss for Alan! but shame we have to have tother one there though...........JS (does he actually do anything?)
I really enjoyed that hour programme tonigth .It was a pleasant change from the flicking cameras and childish presenting on the new GW .
Tonight the cameras were still, allowing us to actually look at the plants and flowers without getting vertigo .
I loved the fresh bright prfessional presentation of Rachel da Thame , and the glorious colours and fabulous displays.
yes I wonder too why its not in June or July but I look forward to every nigth this week and a great few afternoons viewing .
Intelligent gardening again - at last! A proper programme, with people who know what they're talking about. No Toby & Alice then???
I really enjoyed that hour programme tonight .It was a pleasant change from the flicking cameras and childish presenting on the new GW .Â
Agree with your sentiments-I still can't see an obvious reason to spend inordinate amounts of time on designers motivation and background etc. especially 5 minutes into the programme, dedicated to the Chelsea Flower SHOW but hey ho!!.
Big pluses are Charlie and Diamond are not part of the presentation team-so far!!
Poor gardeners and designers the weather is against them.
So Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú, you can do it! A really professionally run garden show - excellent presenting - Alan & Rachael; great camera work; Thank goodness Chelsea has not been dumbed down. Every year I look forward to this and have not been disappointed, so please carry on the good work (and perhaps have a long, hard look at the poor relation that is GW)
Exactly mackayagents, it was a lovely taster for the week.
totally agree with all of you a wonderful change after some , not all gardeners world programmes this season to be well informed not talked down to (as my seventeen year old grandaughter describes the way gardeners world is now presented) was like a breath of fresh air .well done chelsea team.

I also really enjoyed the programme. Chris Beardshaw's dignified intelligence and Alan Titchmarsh's calm experienced presentation highlighted everything that is wrong with the presentational shenanigans on GW at the moment. This tantalising introduction to the show has made me look forward to my visit tomorrow with even more expectation and I will also tune in for more Chelsea coverage.
'comfortable pair of shoes on or having a cup of tea in the morning'.
Totally agree! It is lovely to see Alan back on our screens promoting gardening! I really miss his easy way, you never feel you are being patronised!

I was expecting too much as Beeb Chelsea coverage usually comes in for the same old criticism I was very pleasantly surprised! Great filming, I thought Joe was good which just shows he doesn't need to be made a fools of all the time, CB was great, I learnt a lot in a few minutes from the agapanthus man (why can't GW offer the same information/interest?). Even Rachella da Thame was acceptable. Well done to all concerned - fingers crossed this sort of coverage lasts the week!
Probably different production team than from GW
Yes - apparently the Chelsea coverage comes under "events". A good programme I thought
"Alan Titchmarsh's calm experienced presentation", got it in one. Saw the lunchtime show today and it was all so, so much better than the Friday drivel. Rachel looked cracking in yellow, Christine W even sounds more controlled and polished than usual. What a lovely show. A feel-good programme. I'm looking forward to the others this week.
And the boy Beardshaw looked so lovely with that little bit of white t shirt under his shirt ........ I could have done with a bit of manly Monty though
Agree with everyone - loved the show, a real treat to see AT, CB and Rachael. Great idea to have the real experts talking about their particular passions, eg the agapanthus and tulip folks. Why can't we have this level of input on GW?
I thoroughly enjoyed the lunchtime programme from Chelsea today and seeing Mr T in charge again was simply wonderful. He's such a talented presenter. It was nice to see Christine Walkden included as well - she's a complete one-off! It felt like the GW's of old. Sigh!
Re Chelsea Flower Show coverage - I watched on Monday, and to my dismay the whole hour seemed to be a platform for Titchmarsh and Swift chatting, to each other, and to various celebrities etc. Very little was shown in the way of flowers or gardens. Please put a presenter in charge of this who is not on an ego trip. I want to see gardens, not listen to chat!
We watched the Monday programme and OMG, how patronising was that male designer. I didn't catch his name. What a MCP!
His attitude towards his younger female colleague was atrocious. He literally said: "you come to a point in your life, and Alice has reached that point yet, where you start using your brain." Check it out on i-player.
I think he'd do well on this messageboard.
Hejhog
I really enjoyed that hour programme tonigthÂ
And so did I!
From the "I know it all, so listen", to the self-efacingly humorous, and even the clownish.
AND the amazing, wonderful and irrepressible Carol. What a gift!
I know it all, so listenÂ
Typical of AT's smug patronising attitude. And all the more reason why he's better off presenting chat shows and writing racy novels.
Hejhog
As requested on previous threads, lets try not to make unpleasant personal comments about the presenters and keep the discussion focussed on programme content. Thanks GH
His hair is lovely though.
Hejhog
On the whole I'm enjoying this year's coverage which is a vast improvement on previous years with a lot less celebrity twittering.
However I wish the producer would let us actually see the gardens instead of having to peek pas the presenter. I know what the presenters look like and am happy to have their commentary but don't need them to take up screen space. They also seem to keep going back to the DT garden. Are we going to see all the other 12 in such detail? And all the courtyard, city and other small gardens for more than about 30 seconds?
More CB and JAS on the gardens, plants and plant people too please.
I don't think Nicky Campbell is an asset. Her flower arranging ineptitude was embarassing and she knows so little about gardening. No-one would invite a gardener to do the commentary on a world cup football final or the Olympics so why do we have to have a horticultural nonentity doing Chelsea?
Nicky Campbell is someone different entirely; for starters he's a man. You mean Nicki Chapman?
Hejhog
I expect so. I did say nonentity didn't I - so easy to get names wrong.

An hour every night will show everything that's there, but if there was 6 hours of looking at exhibits with a voice-over saying 'This is Joe Blow's garden, which has won a gold.... and this is Jean Smith's silver-winning floral arrangement...' most people would die of boredom quite quickly.
So sit back, relax and enjoy the bits you like and ignore the bits that other people might prefer. I find the variety interesting and I don't expect to be educated and informed for a whole hour. Chelsea is part of the summer social events season as well as a flower show.
Joe
But that's just it. They don't show every garden or plant display that's there and never have. When they do show a garden I want to see the layout and the plants and the water feature and everything - not the designer's outfit or face in the way all the time.

Ob,
Have you ever been to Chelsea? I've been to Tatton a few times and have found that the coverage has been a pretty fair reflection of the show, except that you can't smell the food stalls.
Joe
Really enjoying the Chelsea programmes but especially the Sunday night one. Thought the mini masterclasses on flowers, e.g. hardy geraniums and tulips, were excellent. Hope we get one on sweet peas. Congrats to all the production team and especially to Rosemary Edwards, ex Gardeners World producer for some really watchable gardening telly.
Yes I have been to Chelsea - recently in 2006 & 2007. I also went to Tatton in 2007 and Malvern last year. Went to Hampton Court 12 yrs ago but it's not on at a good time for me now.
As you see, I'm not talking through my hat and they do miss a lot of gardens and displays at Chelsea. Tatton and Malvern are smaller so easier to cover but then they don't get a week of specials either.

Not suggesting that your hat has a speaking hole, Ob. It's just that I think a programme has to have general appeal. If you go yourself you will home in on particular things that will be different from my particular things. The producer would not please many people by just broadcasting a compendium of all the gardens.
The only way to be 100% satisfied is to go to the show.
Joe
Even Rachella da Thame..Â
Don't be silly, Carmena.
Joe - there are millions of keen gardeners who cannot get to Chelsea because of work or family commitments, logistics of travel and accommodation and also finances. I didn't go this year because I was unable to get away this week.
That leaves me with teh Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's offerongs and photos kindly posted on teh Design board. All I ask is taht instead of showing the same few gardens repeatedly they make the effort to show each garden at least once, not to mention a good luck at some of the displays ion th floral marquee.
There's plenty of time to do that and still have the set pieces from assorted designers and commentators and plants people which vary the pace and focus interest in certain areas.

Ob,
I Know about those millions, but that's life.
I guess the problem is that a lot of people don't sit every night and watch all the progs, so if I can only get to watch half of each prog on, say, Monday and Thursday, I will have a restricted impression of the show. Each programme has to be free-standing.
I like to have a general look, a bit of detail and a bit of fun. I know I can't get the same information as I would if I went to the show in person.
