Disappointed to see Toby place a plant from the outside through the side into his basket, this damages the roots, plants should be put through from the inside leaving the roots intact, I used toilet roll holders to do this, so protecting the foliage.
You have made a good point in mentioning this- It is the correct way of putting a plant into the side of the 'hanging' basket.
i always push plants into the basket from the outside... never had a problem....
Anyone else notice the duff editing on this....one minute all the plants were in, then he pushed in an empty plantpot in the middle and mentioned something about it being helpful for watering, then suddenly there were no plants at all, while the plantpot was planted, then it was full of the plants again and finished, some marigolds suddenly appearing in there too...........could it be magic?
it really does make a mockery of what is supposed to be an 'accessable' and 'non elitist' format you'd think they would at least be giving advice and guidance on how to plant up the humble hanging basket. I was really dissapointed.
I'm glad Beechgrove could be bothered.
I tend to stick to the willow basket types cos they are easier to plant up.
It's symptomatic of a entire team that don't seem to know what on earth is going on from one minute to the next. So that's, according to the closing credits last Friday...
THREE presenters (Carol Klein is probably mighty relieved to be only a satellite to Greenacre).

FOUR 'researchers'

FOUR 'horticultural team'

All the rest of the non-horticultural production team.
The mind boggles, doesn't it?
my wonderful girlfriend helped me plant up some hanging baskets this year- she has no experience whatsoever but.... even with no help from me she managed, a couple of broken leaves maybe but she did it! so that , for me, sums up how easy they are.
thanks Darren for making me feel so inadequate
did i miss the point???
I was more surprised by the editing gaps in Joe's creation - we left him putting in the odd alpine in his vaguely shaped cones - and returned to find his three cones nicely strung together and hung up(no clue as to how it was done).
Also worried about the grass cuttings idea in Toby's - surely they would either dry out and blow away, or fester and rot and cause mildew?
Isn't Toby's use of grass cuttings a) a eco-friendly alternative to using moss; b) purely decorative. It serves no other function than to hide the plastic bag which contains his compost and plants.
As for the criticism of putting in plants through the outside without using a toilet roll... nitpicking. I doubt my wife uses a toilet roll to do ours - and the baskets always look splendid.

It would be interesting to know how the grass cuttings look after a few weeks in the basket - I wonder if maybe the idea is that the plants will grow up and obscure the basket anyway by the time the grass cuttings deteriorate completely.
Apart from a big question mark over the grass clippings (I stand ready to learn, please show me it again in a few weeks), I thought it odd that he planted the top, then the sides and said this was the proper way to do it.
Surely you plant the sides as you fill the container, then the top last?
I'm feeling more than a little uncertain about Toby's techniques as the weeks go by...
The thing is, Hejhog, that moss stays alive in the basket, remaining green as it is continually watered. The moss is the liner which holds in the compost with which it is in direct contact.
In Toby's basket, he used grass clippings, then a plastic liner. So I really don't get how it will continue to look good. But, as I said, I'm more than happy to learn a new technique. Let's see it later in the season.
Yes, I thought that too, Trilliam. Certainly in my garden even if the grass didn't dry up, blow away or rot - the birds would nick it. Very strange way to plant up a hanging basket.
I too question Toby's gardening techniques, I am beginning to think Joe would have been better as the lead presenter having watched him presenting Chelsea this year, and that is saying something. Carol is and always was my number one choice for the presenter of our number one gardening programe. And Alys wouldn't even get past the gate for me!
Oh Please!!! not Joe!
Its taken him 5 weeks to cut a lawn out into a circle.
That remark was totally 'tongue in cheek', but now you have got me thinking........Toby v Joe, now that is a question......
Please neither! CB or Carole or the fragrant Dan Pearson.
Defineatly Carol!

I know that, Trillium, but as moss is a finite and endangered resource we need to think about alternatives to it. We need to look at alternative ways of doing things, for the sake of our environment.
Hejhog
I just rake mine off the lawn!!
That is why GW get it so wrong.......a few minutes showing alternatives to moss, would have been great...oh and the reason why! def not grass cuttings though!!!
I used sheep's wool a couple of years ago and did buy it in a garden centre......it was brilliant.
It won't hold water though, but does stop the soil from escaping.......I hate black plastic linings.......there are loads of different things out there to try.
Remember AT's Fair Isle pullover basket liner?

Trillium: there was so much wrong with his basket it was the lowest point on the programme. If I was starting from scratch and followed his advice I'd be very disappointed in the result 6 weeks down the line. It was dreadful.
