You know, the more I watch this programme the more I am thoroughly enjoying it - and it crams so much worthwhile detail & knowledge into its half-hour slot as well as it just being, well, so easy on the eye & ear as well as fun.
This evening - all that detail about different ways of growing tomatoes - and the trials of the different methods. Getting the kids of the family trying veg growing for the first time well and truly involved - building their own temporary greenhouses and planting up tomatoes, cucumbers, various seeds - the hows and the whys without patronising or feeling 'dumbed down' Trying out 'speedy seeds'... a visit to a garden with a national collection of plants.. Lovely.
It really is a safe pair of hands that is not dated, even though the presenters are over the age of 35.. and yet managing to enthuse new gardeners of all ages it would seem.
Just had my 'fix' after doing chores. J.
I agree that the thread with the family new to gardenig is fun and helpful but last's week's "master class " on pruning evergreens was anything but and this week, Carole's attempts at "cloud pruning" a pine were indeed feeble. Any one with experience of such matters would have suggested a number of plants that were good candidates for cloud pruning..... I doubt very much if anyone would have suggested a pine!
For a start, even for an expert, the basic shape of the underlying tree has to be suitable for the project..... the Beechgrove ended up with a bald goblet, with sprigs of growth....and to "candle" a pine with shears is asking for a mess, in more ways than one.... the damage done will last for ages : candling is done by HAND, leaving no sign of outside interference!!
Oh dear!
Oh thankyou for reminding me that this programme has started! Please God it is on iplayer so I can see a real gardening programme!
Yes beechgrove is on the player and I think it is the best by a mile, and I have been gardening for over fifty years. So I am just off to watch it but before I do I must finish my candling now where did I put those matches
Message for the cyberfattulip: Watch gw: We do not want people of your calibre watching BG:
There is a Japanese garden at Hasselt with some "fine" examples of cloud pruning. The poor things are tortured into submission to an acceptable form by being strapped to posts and frames and weighted like an overgrown bonzai which is itself just another form of plant torture.
I much prefer the kind of cloud pruning that shows the natural structure of the plant - even if it's a goblet - and have seen it done with pines. Still not sure I see the point of it though and I would have to fight hard to resist the itch to grow a clematis up such an enticing bare frame.
Have just returned from holiday so didn't see my recording of BG until just now (Sunday) - I noticed that it's not on my programme reminder for next week on Sky. Is this because it's not on due to the garden show? Can someone tell me when it's next on please so I can book it in? Thanks very much.
There's to be a special on Friday evening next week, Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú1 Scotland, to cover the Gardening Scotland show. After that I assume it reverts to its Wednesday slot on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú2 Scotland.
Why, "Amazing", thank you for your warm welcome.
I do not watch GW, there are only so many times you can watch someone dig a hole..... but, being a Scot, I expect better things of the BG. However, I can only assume from your response that people with real interests in gardening and plants are wasting their time either watching the programme or commenting here.
Sad state of affairs, but if that's your attitude, I leave you with it.
Things seem to have got very personal on here recently cyberfattulip, so don't take it personally!
Just have a at it and roll with it! There really are some very bizarre posts appearing at present!
I think the new Gardeners' World has got everyone hot under the collar loving it or hating it (either that or it's the sap rising 'cos it's spring ). Either way, hopefully things will return to a more normal, friendlier setting soon.
Seems funny that cyberfattulip has removed all their posts except for the last one: Did I say something wrong?
Thanks for the info Obelixx
By the way Amazing, I didn't know you could remove your posts after the event - how do you do that?
I still have all of cyberfattulip's messages on show.
Looking at CFT's number, he or she is a new poster so doesn't necessarily have a posting history yet and even so, quite a few people on here delete their posting histories for some reason. Each to their own.
Sorry Amazing, but you were rather curt and unwelcoming and, whilst Beechgrove is infintely better than GW at the mo, the cloud pruning item was not perfection personified although it was entertaining.
Who has put the stopper on the recent Beechgrove programme. It will not play on my computer, says that I am a foreigner.
However, all the other progrmmes on i-player seem to work.
Is there a conspiracy a foot?

Thank you, Obelix and Holbert. I am a new poster.
It would be pleasant and, for the programme makers, instrctive, if a mature conversation could take place about the merits and demerits of any programme ..... I am glad that some of you are of that opinion!
Cheers,
CFT
Is anyone else finding it difficult to access Beechgrove on i-player?
I have found it on the list of programmes on i-player and attempted to access it. I find it very interesting that I can access the five previous progammes to Beechgrove and the five following without a problem.
Is there a conspiracy?
I would suggest thatthe answer to this is in the affirmative.

Hi dwarfbean,
I don't live in the UK and have always been refused access to viewing programmes on the iPlayer, although I've never tried to see Beechgrove on it. Did I understand one of your previous postings on this thread correctly and you have been able to view previous Beechgrove programmes on iPlayer?
Amazing -
Beechgrove has its faults and always has: presenters talking over each other, talking too quickly (Ms Spray), doing daft jobs like making mosaic tables, holding up graphs on A4 size paper that are not clearly explained, being obsessed with the colour purple etc etc; we could all nit pick to our hearts content if we wanted to - no programme is perfect. Your response to Cyberfattulips's post was ridiculous and rude.
I felt sorry for the pine as well!
Hi Bluedoyenne,
Yes, I have been able to view Beechgrove on i-player in the past and I have been on i-player this afternoon and Beechgrove is on the list of programmes available.
I tried to access Beechgrove but got the blurb to say that I was in foreign parts splashed across the screen. I suppose that that is what you get if you are in foreign parts.
However, I tried the five programmes before Beechgrove and the five programmes after in the list and each was available for access.
I need others in the UK to try and access the programme so that we can see what is happening.
Myself, I can't see why I can access other things on i-player and not Beechgrove.
Can you access any thing on i-player or do you get the same message on all programmes?
dwarfbean
DB I've done a link on the potting shed thread for you to try:

I'll be watching it on iPlayer. I missed a favourite prog last night (non-gardening) & I've just been catching up with that on the Channel Five equivalent of iPlayer.
And that means I've not been watching guess what...
naughty wafflycat: Hope its on soon:
It's on iplayer : I just had a look: That will keep lots of people happy:
When setting my DVD recorder, I noticed that BG is back on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú1 (not Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú2) Scotland from next Weds. Just in case anyone's interested!
