Hi all, there have been a few posts about Chelsea specifics this week, but I thought I'd open a thread to collate any comments you might have about the coverage on TV, radio, Red Button and online.
All feedback is welcome and will be read. But if you do have any specific complaints, you can also use the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Complaints website. This means your complaint will be dealt with via the formal complaints procedure. For more details see:

I do like the downloadable planting schemes. So often we don't get enough time to scribble down the name of an interesting plant or scheme, mentioned on the programme. Instead I can just print them off the Interweb. smiley - ok

I was impressed by James Wong who did some TV presenting earlier in the week. He's also a designer, and his show garden is on the red button right now (Friday).

He seemed very enthousiastic and passionate. I suppose everyone who gets as far as designing a show garden has to have passion for the subject, but James Wong seemed, to me, to come across on TV in a way that few other presenters manage. He wasn't showing off or talking down to the viewers, or trying to act like a clown, just very natural and knowledgable. Fresh and likeable. IMO.

The coverage is fantastic - it's great to see so much detail of all the gardens and so many of the floral exhibits too.

My only complaint - and I know this is a parochial one - is that Chelsea gets so much coverage; 8 days, twice a day and sometimes on both Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú1 and 2, compared to the other shows which get so little.

I know it's the flagship show, but is it really worth 4 times more than all the other shows put together?

I agree the coverage has been absolutely excellent.

There has been a huge amount of interest and information plus a load of light hearted fun exchanges between the presenters without anyone having to play the buffoon.

    Well done to all concerned!

If I hadn't had the red button I would have been very frustrated with the coverage of the pavilion. I could really do without the coverage of the "personalities" gardens (tho they would be good on GW) Why not just go round the exhibitors in the pavilions? There is plenty to keep the real gardener interested. And the coverage of how the exhibitors get ready could be covered either in GW or specials. WE WANT TO SEE THE PLANTS!

What a wonderful week at Chelsea! Excellent high-quality coverage, red button, website - two thumbs up! Like water in the desert... and so good to see so many great presenters - hopefully enough variety to keep us all happy! Ah, the relief and indulgence of revelling in beautiful plant, some inspired design, and even latin names - I LOVE the mystique of latin names, they roll off the tongue like honey smiley - smiley

I did note that huge efforts were made tonight to publicly promote GW... including presenting a new, softer Toby (?) - I do feel for him, it's not his fault, but at least he got some encouragement from the great AT... someone must be taking notice of the overwhelming disappointment voiced in every corner, in spite of appearances...

NOT that it will make me go back to watching this season's GW - I may try again next spring, out of curiosity, just to see what happens to the empty field, and who survives smiley - smiley

I've only seen the 8pm Chelsea programmes and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. Lovely to see a wide range of presenters and the run up to Chelsea for the designers & growers. Alan T makes presenting look so easy - loved the way he got the children he interviewed to describe what they were up to - not an easy task. Brilliant viewing! smiley - smiley

Red Button coverage very good but the rest far to much chat between the presenters and others very often it was just time wasting when we could have seen the displays You do not need closeups of presenters when they are talking.
There is so much to see at Chelsea but the fact is you see very little of it and some of the large gardens are repeated over and over again

Coming up...I reply to this thread...

I may be imagining it, but the coverage has seemed patchier and more repetitive than usual this year. By that I mean they've kept dipping into various gardens in lots of different features, going to the same gardens again and again, without really ever staying long enough. There have been lots of features like one tonight with the journalist woman who's been on a few times and the older garden designer chap and they just wandered around for a bit talking about how different people like different things, flashed up a few images of different bits of the show and then it was all over and you're left wondering why you didn't forward wind through that bit.

    Coming up...another paragraph...

They've had several of those kind of features every night - here's Lisa Tarbuck dipping into several gardens, here's Rachel de Thame dipping into the same gardens, etc etc. It's all got terribly repetitive for me.

Coming up...I sign off and go to bed.

Credit where it's due. It has been worthwhile to see each show on the iPlayer and most of the presenters are knowledgeable and don't try to do a silly "celibridee" style.

Is it just possible that the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú felt it had to pull it socks up after the GW flop?

So funny when Toby was called before Titchmarsh and subjected to 5 minutes of brilliantly subtle condescension. Especially when Alan reminded him of the success he'd made of GW after taking over from Geoff Hamilton.

Good coverage but would be better if the same few gardens where not revisited again and again, also if a show of the same standard or above was held outside London it woudn't get no where near the same coverage, it comes over to me as a kind of show for the "London elitist " the same SORT people that run the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.

There was so much repetition every night on Chelsea. Tonight was just snippets of the week. There could have shown a lot more of all the other exhibitors even those who did not win. Every year its the same celebs a year older. I did not find it that great. At least the weather was good. Even the Celeb guests bits were repeated again tonight. If it had not been for the plants it was pretty boring.

    Too much on the gardens
    Too much talking
    Too many ?celebrities?
Not enough of the plants in the pavillion

I also do not understand why Chelsea should get so much TV time when the other RHS shows are probably better.

Thank you to all concerned with Chelsea coverage. The tv, web and red button coverage has really enhansed my enjoyment of an event I look forward to every year. I know that one cannot expect such coverage for all RHS shows however as I , my brother,my mates at work etc., have all stopped watching Gardener's World , I thought you should know that at the pub, at work and at home people are talking , favourably , about your coverage. The guy who grows aquilegia addressed my concern as to why my seeds took so long to germinate. One of the guys I play rugby with mentioned that you had a piece on a school growing endangered plants. We were asking how one could help so if you can include it in the next RHS shows which I assume will be Hampton Court it would be great. Thanks again.

Is it just grumpy old me or was the CFS TV coverage this year somewhat underwhelming? Where were the all-important plants? Coverage from the plant pavilion was disappointingly limited and what there was lacked real information and depth. Red button extras too were wanting - after much expectation from last year's generally good content. I'm really not interested in or impressed by celebrities, some of whom clearly have little AGM. Thankfully, Mr. Titchmarsh remains a pro and a gentleman throughout the proceedings. I got rather bored, however, with shots and interviews from the same few over-used show gardens. Irritating, 'clever' camera shots should be left to music videos. However, as in real-world gardens, there's always next year ...

    End of show report IMHO:
Overall- mediocre level of quality of show coverage with time taken up with irrelevances celebs, continuous repetition, guests!,drivel about nothing eg either show us how to do a floral display rather than teach a presentersmiley - erm etc etc We want to see the show and NOT the superfluous fill ins.
    With regards to presenters:-
Alan:safe pair of hands getting increasingly distracted and distracting with interchange with Joe and self promotion on poor quips rather than the gardening. 6/10
Joe: On his own quite good why is there need for a double act operation with Alan? needing unnecessary time-consuming interchange and invented conflict and competition.7/10
Nikki: Kept it straight waste of time with the flower arranging but appeared a bit more interested than Jennie Bond. 6/10
Rachel: Knows her gardening but not enough time to do a proper job and is better at practical work rather than gloss although she does scrub up great and plays the fashion model well. 7/10
Andy Sturgeon: well qualified gardener but fish out of water as a presenter which is a whole new brief.5/10
Christine: More time, change your jumper, great enthusiasm 6/10
Alice M (forgot her surname I'm sorry): RHS show organiser: fantastic & great on camera, knew her stuff, genuine enthusiasm, permanent smile, genuine-put AT to shame on communications suggest she changes her job to lead the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú show and GW!! 9/10
    Camerawork:much improved 7/10
Overall could do better, cut the ego's give more to the show but better than nothing. smiley - ok

All the invented competition and rivalry is a producer's ploy. It's supposd to make it more interesting to watch but given that 90% of the viewers are keen on plants and or gardens it is a redundant ploy. It was pointed out often enough that Chelsea exhibitors are friendly and helpful to each other and that is also how most gardeners are so why the need for fake competition in presenting?

I found the camera work much improved this year so thanks for that but why, oh why, during those sequences where one flower after another is flashed in front of us could we not have the variety name on screen too? There was a whole string of gorgeous roses and not a name in sight. How is anyone to identify a favourite and seek it out?

The sequences on the planning and building of Chelsea were very interesting so thanks for that too but in a programme about CFS I really don't want any time wasted on celebrities of any description or their gardens. They can feature in GW or a whole new programme - I'm a Celebrity, Get Out In My Garden!

I want to see all the gardens and not the same ones over and over. I want to see more of the displays in the floral marquee especially British and European growers whose plants will be happy in my garden. I'd quite like to see some of the other stands selling products and ornaments such as water features, sculptures, obelisks and so on.

It was good to see a variety of garden presenters and AT is still the best anchor handling everything with aplomb, good humour and a deep reservoir of experience and knowledge. Even Christine is quite good when thus reined in and focused on plants but next year, please, please, ditch the dizzy blonde Nicky. She is not an asset in a gardening show and completely spoiled what could have been very interesting flower arranging tips.

MUCH better coverage than usual, though I could have done without Nigel Havers and Lisa Tarbuck, neither of whom seemed to know what they were about........and Nikki wouldn't be far behind them. I thought Toby seemed much better off the cuff than (possibly over rehearsed) on GW, and I warmed to him a bit. I liked dark-haired Alice so much better than flame-haired Alys - can we have a swap ? Interesting features about specialists and growers made for a much more well-rounded set of programmes, too.

Obelixx, I agree with all your comments. AT was a delight, Joe better kept away from the veg patch and snatches of CB and Carole excellent. But why oh why introduce a non-gardening presenter (Nikki whatsit) she added nothing and was irritating with the flower arranging.

I would also have loved to see more of the smaller gardens. I know its heresy but I found the big show gardens (the Telegraph garden and the Italian chap's garden) very cold. The smaller gardens have lots more ideas, plants etc. that you could actually use in your own garden.

However, that aside, I enjoyed the coverage - so much better than GW!!

Nikki is the must have some arm candy for the over eighties bit the producers insist on, after all it is Chelsea and we are all supposedly doddering old (I leave it to your imgination).
I thought it was good coverage but then I have the red button and a laptop, I could wander where I pleased.
Love A.T. and C.K., Joe came over much more confidant, but question why Havers and Tarbuck, we could have saved money and time there.

AT is certainly a safe pair of hands. Somehow it's a relief to see him on TV but he does get drawn into banter and silly chit chat - particularly with Joe. Joe is a nice enough chap but no great shakes in the banter department. Much better talking about plants and gardens and showing his genuine enthusiasm for them. (But a few years ago AT was on with that appalling Dermuid and what an ego tripper HE was, and what a waste of time to be forced to watch him.)
One has to ask oneself why it isn't it enough for the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú to have personable and knowledgable presenters (Carol no. 1 in this department)? Why the addition of celebs, why that ghastly Nicki Campbell, why the innane chit chat and pseudo competitive atmosphere - the hype and the 'pace' that is added but in fact simply detracts from the quality of the programme. Why doesn't the quality of the programme count?
Any producer worth his/her salt would SEE what it is that is superfluous, condescending and trivial and would eliminate it either in the cutting room before we ever got to seeing it or by chosing their presentors carefully and giving the programme an 'ethos'. They wouldn't make a programme AROUND the trivial!!!!
Presenters should provide something invaluable - and unmissable - to the programme. They shouldn't be simply decoration nor should they be gossiping amongst themselves and having a jolly time which pretty well excludes we, their viewers! This is a sad trend in many a programme on TV.
The comment about Toby being interested in the views of people at the show is really very superficial - Toby is promoting himself as the man who talks to The Common Gardener and his unspoken plea is 'don't ditch Gardener's World, please, please? I really am a good guy! Watch me talk to the Common Man/Woman'
It is very sad the way that we see so little of the gardens, of the flowers, of the pavilions, that coverage be provided so that we can reach our own conclusions and not be spoon fed with other people's opinions. Which presentor was it who said 'I don't normally like rhododendrons, but this yellow one...etc etc'. I objected to this instantly as it was gratuitous to add his personal likes or dislikes to any description of plants. Would the producer send someone into the cactus tent who would start by saying 'normally I don't like cactus, but these aren't bad' Maybe he has an opinion but I didn't ask him for it and I only want information and descriptions and not his pesky opinions and egotistical asides. I like to be shown around a garden by someone who loves plants. ALL plants. (Preferences O.K. but not this 'I don't like' business.)
AT and CK - maybe even Joe are of this ilk. Rachel too. Please, PLEASE, leave it to them.

[1] Quite enjoyed some of the celebrities and I liked the stories behind some of the exhibitors.
[2] A bit repetitive, the same gardens again and again.
[3] I'd forgotten just how good Alan Titchmarsh is. Loved his interview with Toby, especially his remark about having better things to do on Friday night than watch GW.
[4] I really want to like Joe, but I wish he would stop playing 'the lad'.

i always look forward to cfs, even though ive never been.sadly,i dont think the coverage is as good as it has been in previous years.as i work,i dont get to see the daytime shows, and i also missed a couple of the evening shows too.previously, you could watch the latest episode on the red button, but unless i missed something,i couldnt catch up with missed shows, and i cant seem to get the computer iplayer thingy to play.
as mentioned by several others here, there was to much repeating, and not enough on the small gardens.i find the small gardens more appealing, because they are more realistic, given that so many of us only have small gardens, there is more that we can identify with.for me,a garden is about the plants, not themes, meanings etc.the trouble is,i find,is that i cant help viewing these gardens from a gardeners perspective.as beautiful as some of them are,i cant help thinking, well you wouldnt put a fennel there,it,ll be huge soon, not to mention seeding everywhere.and ,well thats preety, but it wont look that good in 2 weeks when all the iris and peonys are finished.and for gods sake, tulips are over now,so that look will never work.
this all said,i still love watching, and i admit to having pinched ideas,or being inspired.
i love alan titmarsh, and joe swift, and rachel wassername, but not so keen on the flower arranging,or floral hats, all i can think is,oh,theyll all be dead in a couple of days,i treasure every flower that adorns my garden.

Mopped it up like a sponge and enjoyed every moment.

There's no one like AT to head up the Chelsea presentation. He and Joe have a natural rapport. Not so sure about Nicky Chapman. Someone with more gardening depth would be a better fit.

The new-comer Alice Bowe is one to nurture I think. She has the knowledge and is also young and pretty. Her shared piece with James Alexander-Sinclair on the wave garden was a new dimension and made for a good debate.

Thank you Beeb. More of the same, any time at all.

    Pete.

Sorry to be nit picking but I think it's Alex ( just in case we ever see her again) and you never saw the programmes repeated on the red button - always the show gardens and the pavilion ( although there was greater depth in previous years ) smiley - smiley

    To clarify on Alice/Alex/Alys......

Alice Bowe is the young garden designer and was part of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's Chelsea presenting team.

Alex Baulkwell is a RHS Chelsea Show organiser.

    Alys Fowler is Gardeners' World.

Nobody's mentioned Lila das Gupta, who was excellent. Natural, enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

Thanks for the clarification I think Alex Baulkwell, who is the RHS Chelsea Show organiser, is either a born natural or excellent professional who put a lot of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú presenters in the shade.

I thought Alex was great at her job. She put a lot of people to shame. She was totally professional and seemed to love her job. Even with the stress of the whole thing she seemed to take it in her stride. At lot of people should look at her as a real role model of how to do a good job and present yourself to the public. A really dedicated person.

Credit where it is due, Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú, the coverage of Chelsea was thoroughly enjoyable. Largely down to Mr T being a safe, yet never boring, pair of hands. He does have the knack for speaking in a way that is never *over excited* yet his love and enthusiasm for plants is put across so well. Nor does he patronise *casts withering glance in direction of GW...*

The other presenters - Ms K, Ms W, Mr S, Ms deT, Mr B - all great and... can we have more of Alex Baulkwell please - she really does come across as an assured natural. The growers' guides were enjoyable too, and the interviews with various growers & designers at their gardens & displays. I particularly liked the more detailed look at how some of the designers were looked at in depth as to what had inspired them and how they put their gardens/displays together. And as to how to show the younger folk getting involved in gardening - the children from the school doing the conservation and propogation of an endangered species of orchid was top notch, and Mr T's interviewing of young gardeners was delightful.
