Has anyone noticed on Sky television that the Gardening Channel has completely disappeared!! There wasn`t any notification that it was going and now there are virtually no gardening programmes on. Very very annoyed!

They were running announcements on the channel itself for ages before - saying that "all your favourite homes and gardens shows" were moving to the channel Home. Of course that assumes your favourite garden show was Ground Force because that's the only one I've seen so far on the epg for Home.

I wrote and complained. This is their reply:

We are sorry to hear of your disappointment at the closure of UKTV Gardens . I am sure you will understand it was not an easy decision to make. UKTV is a commercial business and unfortunately, was under-performing significantly. There are just not enough viewers who share your (and our) love of the channel.

Ground Force was the most popular of the programmes, which is why it's now part of our Home channel, along with City Gardener, , Home Front in the Garden. We are dedicated to getting the right mix of gardening programming on the new Home channel. Because of this, we are asking people to submit their requests for shows that they would like to keep on the new channel. Gardeners’ world is a common request so we would like you to know that UKTV is aware of this. We would welcome your feedback on any other titles we are showing to help inform our schedules on both these channels going forward.

Our factual channel Blighty, is now showing some of the more 'outdoors' programmes that were on UKTV Gardens (Coast, Wye: Voices from the Valley, Passion for Plants, Bill Oddie Goes Wild, Birding with Bill Oddie, Castle in the Country). I hope that you will enjoy these and more.

We have transferred the online content from the website over to www.lovehome.co.uk with some new content if you are interested.

Again, we are sorry that you are disappointed and hope that you are not put off watching UKTV channels completely. With the feedback that we are getting on the recent changes, we hope to keep the core gardening programmes still going. Unfortunately, there were not enough viewers to support a whole channel financially.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us JMB.smiley - ok
As with most things these days reassuring "soothing" comments from UKTV but still a significant viewing option loss and will be interested to see if their audience numbers improve-I doubt it.
Where will be see the GW reruns now I wonder? daytime BB3 or 4 perhaps for the Summer-no, far too logical. smiley - doh

I suppose the crux of the problem is that the beeb is producing so few garden programmes now there isn't enough new material to keep the channel going.

I can watch endless repeats of the old GWs and a few others but have had enough Ground Force, Garden Angels, Garden Invaders etc to do me for the rest of my life!

It occurred to me, somewhat belatedly, that everyone ought to write to them and ask for GW to be put back into their schedules. If enough people do that they might reconsider, though they'll probably wait till times are less hard. I found the form here:

Interestingly I was browsing the viewing figures earlier today and the explanation from UKTV doesn't add up. In the weeks I've looked at Gardener's World was regularly appearing in the top handful of programmes on the channel - in fact in the week beginning 19th April 2009, 7 out of the top 10 programmes on UKTV Gardens were editions of Gardener's World!

I can only see one week of figures since the channel turned into 'Really' but on the basis of that it looks like the new Channel is getting considerably fewer viewers than UKTV Gardens used to get - but since moving to Style, Ground Force seems to get a lot more viewers.

What it all adds up to I don't really know, but it'll be interesting to see if UKTV do more shuffling in attempts to get these channels right in the future.

I have just e-mailed UKTV and complained about UKTV garden channel disappearing. I used to enjoy watching old GW, Christine's Garden and Wartime kitchen garden. I am really missing this channel smiley - sadface

I wondered where it had gone! I scoured the listings for it this morning. Typical, the only channel I liked to watch when I have 5 minutes to myself, and it's gone. The old Gardeners Worlds are sorely missed.
