After watching another couple of 30 minute monstrosities and watching the gathered faithful hanging on to every word, grinning like Cheshire cats and applauding like seals at the end....leaves me thinking perhaps they genuinely /do/ think they are giving us what we want. smiley - erm

Videoed the programme and so I was able to fast forward on the parts I did not like. Not much left to watch.

I have stopped watching GW but decided to watch last night as it was special. Started off well with wonderful plants and gardens. Then Toby and Joe launched into making a 30 minute thing and I turned off, shame.

Could the production company spare enough money in their budget to buy Alys a hairbrush? She looks like a scarecrow.

I felt sceptical about Toby's device for watering a window box for a month.

It seems to me that a window box needs a watering-can per day, maybe more in hot weather. That's in the order of 30 gallons for a month. But Toby seemed to suggest that just a couple of pints should be sufficient.

Did I misunderstand, or am I just wasting water.

Another DIY session on the 30 minute fix spot. smiley - sadface

I thought 'oh we might get some inspiration for planting a window box', at least Joe's did attempt to tackle the problem.

There were some beautiful plants shown in the rest of the show though.

Whole month might be stretching it, but assume that it would need less watering from on top because water will stay near roots - only thought would be that roots will get in the gap between the pipe and the lid top and then will quickly grow to fill the empty void space - eventually the roots will fill it meaning no space for water so now plants unable to receive sufficient water will die. Oh well - good whilst it lasted.

I have loved GW from a girl but I do not watch it anymore. It amazes me that the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú manage to drive me away rather than other channels tempting me to view them! I no longer watch countryfile either. Am I an old timer who is set in their ways? No, I just miss informed, entertaining, educational well written programmes.
I can't bear the presenters on either programme. Find another Geoff Hamilton or Monty Don for GW and bring back John Craven for Countryfile please.

I watched it as I wanted to see what was happening at the show. Joe and Carol delivered -it's what they're good at but there wasn't enough time spent and not enough shots of the details.

I find TB and Alys more and more cringeworthy. The 30 minute fix and the "tomato masterclass" (masterclass?) were scraping the barrel. Why wouldn't TB let Alys show how to pinch out? It's second nature to most of us but lots of new gardeners ask exactly how it should be done and there was an opportunity to instruct. They must have enough Gardener's Delight plants to sacrifice a few fruit for the sake of a demo!

I hated the way he acted in the medal giving to poor sobbing Ralph. The build-up led me to believe he'd got Best in Show or Gold at least. Ralph was delighted with his bronze which was a relief after all that false suspense. And the token attempt to be huggy afterwards -cringe.

Alys still seems ill at ease talking to the camera which makes me feel uncomfortable watching her, although I do like her.

To be positive to finish. I did like the Tena garden, it looked very pretty from what I could see of it. I liked Carol's Campanula too, a must-have plant indeed!

I was quite enjoying this program for a change, lots of Carole and lots of lovely plants. Then why of why did we have to have a 30 minute fix? Absolute rubbish and the tomato 'masterclass' was so basic. Duh! We could have cut those out and seen even more lovely plants.

Hi, Paperwhite. Yes, I did see your post and think you are to be congratulated for raising the issue with them....thank you!

I'm not really in need of cheering up personally, as I'm in the fortunate position of being able to differentiate between the garbage and useful stuff.
I do however worry for people new to gardening being mislead with some of this rubbish advice and to see the demise of our much loved flagship gardening programme.

Hi, jungle_jane - With respect, I think that this is the point being made. It wasn't a 'master class' it was just the bare basics.
Even the comfrey feed tip will be no use for this year, unless you have some comfrey already growing.

Good luck with your future tomato growing.

Whilst I understand the need to develop and change with the times, I do sometimes feel that we're covering old ground...BUT

It's a fact that gardening has increased in popularity over the past few years...GW has contributed significantly to this imo. I know several people who watch the programme but do not actually 'garden'...they see it as an entertainment prog...and if some of these people rip up their crazy paving and tarmac smothered gardens and plant a few veg as a result of seeing how easy it is to do (little do they know...), that's a good thing isn't it?

I've never been a fan of 'Instant' gardening...altho the early series of Groundforce were fun and I picked up a few ideas.. smiley - biggrin I think that the Thirty Minute Fix harks back to this sort of show and I'm not keen tbh.

Gardening for me is a passion, therapy, exercise, a way of spending time with friends and family...

I agree that it would be lovely to have some of the more challenging aspects of gardening covered, but will remain a faithful viewer of GW, I like all the presenters...and was lucky enough to have a chat with Carol at GW Live, was even filmed handing over an agastache! Maybe deep down I'm a shallow person (!) but I was thrilled to bits.

The programme has to appeal to the viewers, we were all novices at one time. We can't expect the show to only aim to please one particular generation of gardeners as they develop their skills and become more advanced.

As it is I think that it does a pretty good job, I've been gardening for years and still find it entertaining and useful...maybe I'm just easily pleased....smiley - smiley

After all...there are plenty of books, magazines, websites and organisations for us to further our interest..and if you have the time and the cash there are courses.

    I'll get m'coat.....

I watched Friday's GW and noted some things to look out for on my Saturday trip to GW live. Saw some beautiful gardens. The planting in The Sanctuary Garden made it my favourite. Listened to Joe and Toby at the Greenacre garden. Both seemed pleasant, friendly and knowledgable and had audiences that don't deserve to be ridiculed. Dare I say it?.. yes ..I was never a Monty Don fan as I found him rather depressing.

I read this board about GW if you feel so strongly about the standard of the programme, why on earth do you bother trying to watch it. There are many 1,000's of people taking up gardening each who have no idea where to start and GW this year are going back to basics.

I am sure most of you tune in on friday to have a moan on here lol..

I watch River cottage far better programme anyway.

Please read the board harder. You should then understand why so many of us are passionate enough about GW and our gardens to feel moved to object. Agreed, its not all bad and there are some gems for new gardeners but we know it could be so much better.

GardenerJim - I’ll use this analogy to explain why your ‘why on earth do you bother trying to watch it.’ comment irritates. .

If you had used the same local pub for the past 40+ years and suddenly the landlord decided to change it into a trendy wine bar for kids.... your options would be put up with it or go elsewhere. Would you be happy with this?

One of my pet hates here is when people suggest switching off or not watching, as the answer to GW shortcomings.

Oooh...I hadn't thought of it like that David...I do see your point, altho I don't necessarily agree with you about the fall in standards.

Have you approached the show with your concerns? (sorry I've not been around much so I don't know if this is an old wound I'm poking at with a stick...) A mate of mine feels much as you do and contacted the production team...they said that they were very keen for him to make suggestions and comments...dunno what good it'll do....

I have watched GW for years and yes standards isn't good as pervious years and I am passionate about gardening, but it don't mean I come on here after every show moaning..

Have you ever considered there many millions of people who like watching the show..I think the heart of matter is that grumppy old gardeners don't like the fact the show is more light hearted and lost some of it's stuffyness. And are looking to new gardeners in the shows content.

I have been passionate about gardening for years and I do still watch GW.But for me River Cottage is the best.

Anyway not that I take much notice really, I remember last year, when Joe Swift took on his allotment just because he wanted to do it different to other people, People mocked him that's how petty some people are on here.

You should be thankfull the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú still want to do a gardening programme, be thankfull Gw still on the air, or will it with cuts the bbc are considering.

I get sick and tired of people moaning on these message borads about presenters, format, camera angles etc. I have only just started reading the message boards again because of it.

When Monty was presenting GW people were moaning, now Toby is presenting, and people are still moaning. What exactly do you all want? I feel that people just enjoy moaning on these message boards.

As a 29 yr old newbie gardener and veg grower, I find the current GW informative with a light hearted edge. It is encouraging the younger generation to garden and grow your own. Surely this can't be a bad thing.

I have seen old episodes of GW on UKTV gardens (I miss this channel) with GH and AT presenting, and I have enjoyed these to.

I just wish the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú would put more gardening programmes on such as new series of Christine's Garden, AT How To Be A Gardener. I think if this was possible it may stop people from moaning about GW. They may moan about the other programmes instead.

Sorry for the rant, it had to be said.
