I have found Carol's propagation and gardening tips for beginners very useful. As a result I have taken cuttings of lavender, penstemon and gaura and best of all grown those green seeds of primula candelabra that she showed us a few weeks ago- never knew you could grow green unripe seeds.
I hope she keeps on with this section of the prigramme. It gives me something to work on each week. Could Czrol write a little book (cheap) on propagation with photos please?
I like the whole programme now and find the variety of presenters excellent. They seem to get on really well together.
Am amazed that my brother is now watching the programme too (he always hated gardening ) because he likes the do it yourself parts and and the fencing and path tips from Joe and Tony. You muct be doing something right

I think Carol its great, bit of a hero of mine reallly, she inspired me to propagate my own plants and I have a garden full as a result.
I now try to take some cuttings a couple of time a week, that way, I always seem to have something to pot on.
A favourite of mine is the hardy geranium. I divide in autumn and they pot on any self sown seedlings in Spring. Started off with 2 plants 3 years ago and have in excess of 30 now and 20 seedlings this year. ££££££

June's GW magazine has article by CK on propagation & more to come in July/Aug. Useful advice plus pics.

completely agree with you about the ease of splitting hardy geraniums. Like you I have split them again and again and made many plants for myself and friends. I have split a lovely blue one with a white centre called Rosanne (flowers June to October), a shell pink one called Wargrave Pink, a small purply one called Russell Pritchard, a sprawling purple one with lime green leaves (Anne Folkard) and a pale pink one with silver grey/green leaves called Mavis Simpson (flowers June to October). Please let me know of any long flowering ones that you recommend. They are so reliable and have brightened up my garden.

Thank you - have now seen these photos and it is just what I wanted - would just like it all in a little booklet.

janebal, try Jolly Bee (although very similar to Roseanne; some say it's the same) and G. pyrenaicum Bill Wallis, both go on until the frosts

For me, a very amateur gardener, there is no better feeling than when your first attempt at propagating a plant- whether from seed or cutting- succeeds. Carol is pure inspiration.

Hi Jane, RHS do a small handbook on propagation. It covers all aspects of prop and has good drawings. It is not too expensive. I am an experienced gardener, even working for a nursery once in the propagation department but still find myself dipping into this book for details.
I also enjoyed the fencing feature from Joe. It matters not a jot where it was placed as Greenacres is a demonstration garden and I think posters on this board keep forgetting this.

I have never really been a fan of Carol's but after watching her tips about sowing green seeds I did just that the next day in my garden and my flower bed in the allotment, WELL all I can say now is that I am a convert to Carol's ways of doing things, my seedlings are looking wonderful and its a brilliant way of increasing stock and not having to wait for the seed heads to ripen. I do like her 'Grown Your Own Veg' book and I have used it constantly since getting it earlier in the year. This really being only my second year of growing things Carol's tips have given some confidence in my gardening. Thanks Carol

I agree on the book idea.
You could spend years waiting for someone to tell you exactly how to propagate a particular favoured plant. Or, you could get all the answers by buying Propagating Plants by the RHS. Mine is a large paperback and one of the authors is Alan Toogood. It has everything you need to know about propagation, from seed of named plants (trees, shrubs, herbaceous, annuals, biennials and so on) as well as all of the vegetative methods, from root cuttings and division to stem cuttings, leaf cuttings, grafting, layering and stooling. It really is worth the approx. £10 I spent (just think, learn how to propagate one herbaceous perennial into six new plants and you've already got your money back).

I followed the advice with the primula green seeds. They are outside in their trays and no sign of anything yet. If anyone else has success i would be pleased to hear about it. I will let you know what happens to mine.

Londonplantmad-
My primula candelabra green seeds have not come up at all after about 5 weeks. I have now tried again with ripe black seeds from the same plants. Hope they will be more successful. Please let me know if your green seeds come up - was Carole's advice wrong?
