I enjoyed the programme in the main ( the 30min fix is still rubbish!!). Couldn't get over Joe's allotment.Where were the triangular beds, the weeds and the other detritous? For someone who only gets there at weekends he's done a remarkable job!! Perhaps he has a legion of gnomes who help out at night
There were at least 3 things which I didn't know or were especially pertinent to my garden this week, which is an improvement on the norm. All in all, a good programme this week
Yes, not bad at all. As you say, the 30min fix is pure Blue Peter as deserves to be junked as soo as possible. The rest of the programme was OK.
Afterwards I watched the Hampton Court programme, but I struggled to stay awake and went to bed. Not before the most dreadful gardens of the wives of Henry VIII. Pompous tommyrot. "Here is a bed of daisies 'cos she loved a cat called Daisy. Here are some Love-in-a-Mist for the love she felt for the King". That sort of thing. Utter bilge. Were the gardens attractive to look at? In the main they weren't.
I really enjoyed the coverage on roses. Thank you - there were some beautiful shots and I loved Toby's enthusiasm for them with descriptions of scents.
Yes the roses where fab!! Never seen such a rosegarden. Makes you want to start all over again in your garden.
I hope you enjoyed it and made the most of it. OFF AIR AGAIN for x weeks due to golf and 'The Proms'. Put GW on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú1 for a week or the proms on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú4. Leave our GW alone!!
-Rant over-
Well, I thought the program was a big improvement this week, was it because it was short in a real garden? The 30 minute fix is and will always be rubbish. Carole's bits good as usual. Shame the program was shot a week in advance (the weather has cooled down a bit now) - still need the 'what to do now' bit though.
Yes - I enjoyed it too, like Toby's humour! Think we need a few more plant names on screen (what was that gorgeous purple leaved plant Toby used in the 30 minute fix?) and agree with the need for a what to do now, I used to really like that bit.
Superb - best of this year's series by far. First one I've watched without an expletive at some point or other.
I picked up loads of good tips, there were plants a-plenty, gentle enjoyable filming, much less DIY, and best of all - presenters at ease with each other and their content. Superb.
To top it all, a full length GW AND coverage of Hampton Court as well. It can - and should - be done every week during the spring and summer.
Thanks - I feel like I have my Friday evenings back
I liked it!! except for Carol's bit of course.
Bit by bit, the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú has junked all the 'innovations' which made GW such a travesty and the presenters a laughing-stock. Perhaps the 30-min fix will be quietly dropped as the powers-that-be in the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú realise that chasing the 'yoof' audience has been an embarrassing failure.
last nights programme was absolutely brilliant i am so happy, ive really missed it. Its back on track, back on form and so i'd like to thank all the fellow 'moaners' on here for bringing it back home. It can only get better.
old skool is cool.
Much better than the third programme from Hampton Court.Pity it's being shelved for a while just as it is getting back into its stride. The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú really does treat its gardening viewers with contempt!!
Hi GardenBabe,
the purple leaved plant in question was a Tradescantia ‘Purple Sabre’
Hope that helps.
Superb - best of this year's series by farÂ
Completely agree. I also feel like I've got my Friday evenings back. I enjoyed it all (well apart from the veg - I agree with Petalina, that there's been far too much of it up to now), but I can put up with it - in moderation ).
I also agree with the comment about the time spent on all the clap-trap about the Show Gardens (during all the large RHS shows. Going into detail about what each plant, stone and God knows what represents.) Living not far from Tatton I go there every year. I've also been to Hampton Court and this year, Chelsea. From what I've overheard at these shows, whenever anyone reads the info on a garden, they are just discussing the plants, or the overall appearance of the garden - not 'what they are meant to represent'. I wish the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú would interview a few people next time (at Tatton) and ask them do they know what the 'theme'of the garden is - or, more to the point - if they care. They are interested in what it looks like. With this in mine, it would be nice if the progs spent more time on the actaul plants.
Didn't think it had changed much at all. Still the same Alys giggling like a schoolgirl. Still the same Toby, who I believe to be quite a skillful gardener in real life, struggling to find a screen presence and, thanks to the production company, coming across with marginally less charisma than my gardening boots.
Gardener's World will never improve until the Beeb realises that this production company is devoid of gardening knowledge; steeped in the Blue Peter style of production, and has significantly failed to research and target the audience who will have an interest in real gardening programmes.
FYI - have just started building our garden at Tatton - going well so far!
I agree, I can't deal with gardens as allegory -they are what they are, or what they appear to be.
Hi Trillium,
Glad your garden build at Tatton is going well. Hope that the showers don't develop into incessant rain like it did the other year.
dwarfbean
Dwarfbean - if the forecasters were right, we'd have had heavy rain for the past two days. As it happens we've had none until tonight. So we'll just go along evey day and get on with it!

...... and these are the people who are telling us what the weather will be like in 5o years time !! I was sure yesterdays forecast was going to start with an apology from 'Fred the weather' -as the forecast for Friday (at 11.25am ON Friday) was for torrential rain and very heavy thunder storms. Not one drop did we see.
Good luck with the Tatton garden. I saw you at Arley Hall a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful gardens - seem to get better every year.
Thought it was just the same dross. More like a game show with all the bits and bobs.
Bring back Monty!

Absolutely totally agree. - also with the bit about presenters
struggling to find a screen presence and, thanks to the production company, coming across with marginally less charisma than my gardening bootsÂ
You said it Allionii! But are any of the producers listening and taking note?
