After much publicity of the DIG IN campaign I am disappointed that so little air time has been given over to the progress of Toby’s raised beds and all the veg he and Alice have planted, so far in the series. For example early in the series they planted tomatoes in the grow bags using two different methods. It would be useful to see the progress to date.

I think there is/has been far too much coverage of food growing on all the gardening programmes. However, I do agree that projects, once begun, should be followed up regularly. This does not seem to be happening. It is not helped of course by the programme constantly being taken off for other programmes, but at least the projects should be even further ahead. We need a review programme/section or it becomes even more fragmented.

You stick them in and you water them and they grow.
Now where's the skill in that
After you have seen it once or done it once its easy. Other wise we would all die of hunger.
There has been too much veg. growing on GW in the past and that has resulted in viewers leaving in their droves.

What a crass and ridiculous statement.

I think it's not only stoopid but designed to provoke.
Also from someone who doesn't know anything about veg growing.

Would that it was that simple, Rowan!
For many, whose experience is less than yours (or mine: a gardener for many years) a follow up is essential imo.
The bitty formula for today's GW is less than helpful for those trying to learn. The least they could do is to follow up on a regular basis and explain basic principles.
If time is an issue (and in hour it ought not to be!) perhaps the dreaded 30 minute quick fix could be sacrificed!

I would be happy just to watch a programme on veg growing!
It isn't just a matter of throwing the seeds in the ground and waiting for them to grow and harvest!
It always amazes me that some things grow great for some people but not for others, I have success and failures every year. I hope to learn from my experiences, share them, and also learn from the experience of others, one system doesn't work for all, but sometimes through trial and error we can all improve our crops.
Show us the results of what was started, good or bad!

Well if that is how you grow veg Rowen, I would love to know where you stick 'em. clearly not that easy to all.

Totally agree Rowan. It was done to death in the days of (as someone on here named him) - the echo-warrier. I and most of my gardening friends were part of the 'droves' who stopped watching the programme as a result of the excessive amount of time spent on veg.

Lets start with my father who was a grower of prize veg and take it from there. He was also a veg judge as well. Lets say that I spent a large part of my childhood either tending veg. watering veg or growing veg.
Lets also say my grandparents had a farm with half an acre of walled veg. that we also used to tend.
Growing veg is not rocket science its very easy and can be carried out by any novice. You don't need to be shown how to do it on TV you just need to get out there and do it and get your hands dirty.
I like to see ornamental plants and gardens and things I would never grow. People who collect plants always interest me. Veg growing is a real turn off for me because it is not a challenge. Been there done that got the t-shirt.

Some of the posters on here are worse than what GW has become over the last couple of years.
It takes a variety of subjects to make any gardening programme interesting.
I grow a great variety of veggies on my allotment, but I grow lots of flowers for cutting and to attract the bees, butterflies and the birds help themselves to the seedheads.
BUT! ,it would be a vey dull world if we all agreed.
Roll the next veggie spot on GW!

Braidman
veggie spot is fine
Its when it turned into a veggie program (during Monty's era) that everyone I know turned off.

Well i would be quite happy to watch a proramme just about veg. If you have the experience of growing up around veg then no doubt you will gain wisdom over the years. Those of us who are new to growing appreciate advice to help us. If only it were so easy as just planting seeds. My mistakes from this year will aid me in my future growing years.

Seen one flower: seen the lot!!!!!!!!
But: veggies, well you never know what they will taste like.
AND! I do love going to "FLOWER SHOWS", even though they are not all flowers.
Cheers!!

We can all watch as many or little programmes on growing veg but it's down to the individual as to whether they grow or not, you can give them all the love you can and they might fail you, or, neglect them and they grow like crazy, it's just pot luck, you either have or you don't.

I have 3 gardens at home, 2 of them have flowers, shrubs, 20 pots, I have 9 shrubs along the long drive. The 3rd garden has 11 raised beds, green house, many containers and 5 fruit trees. I have been growing veg for over 30 years. I would be happy watching programms on how to grow veg all day long as I can still learn something new. I am bored with flowers, shrubs, trees, long borders, exotic borders, roses, clemetis, front gardens, 30 mins fix etc. etc. Even a 5 mins slot of veg growing makes me happy, NOT Joe's allotment shots, I have to admit.

after reading all the diverse answers to the question, well quite interesting.but if things are going wrong with our crops, then i would also like to be told why, on gardening programme.
my beetroot have grey patches suddely on leaves.
is this normal?or is it because of the much rain were getting?i dont know, any answers out their welcome.but this sort of thing id like to see on gardeners world,so i know about my crop.but my beetroot still growing, and as long as they do that, there is a chance i can eat them,so i am looking forward to see if they survive.on the other hand grey patches on beetroot leaves might be on everyones beetroot.and be normal.so while were on wondering ,well see what i mean.daff world

Daff if you wait for a garden show to tell you what is going wrong with you veg plants. You plant will be beyond hope by that point. Judging by last seasons, GW is not good at plant problems. Since they can not even solve some most basic problems in there own gardens on the show.

They're particularly stupid as this year has been fantastic for growing both veg and fruit. Bumper crops all the way (or perhaps I'm getting better at growing them) apart from the dodgy manure incident which wiped out my Charlotte potatoes. Everything else is fantastic.
I just google the words, 'Monty Don' and watch or read anything that comes up — can't go wrong.

I think Gardeners World has completely lost the plot, if you will pardon the pun. Whilst I have not bothered to watch every episode (unlike previous series when we never missed one single programme) those that I have seen looked like a programme lacking in content trying to spin things out to fill an hour.
More people are beginning to grow vegetables as well as flowers now, so I agree that programme content which supports the DIG IN campaign would be interesting.
The programme has received so much criticism that maybe the producers will take heed and change the format for next year and change it back to a gardening programme, and make good use of the airtime.
