I was amazed at TV's coverage of Tatton Park Show on Friday in which Ms Klein and other regulars wandered around and declared themselves totally gobsmacked. Tatton Park this year was totally garish with combinations of vivid and hideous colours which were better suited to local authority traffic island planting schemes.

And the specially designed gardens were exercises in total rubbish. Many looked like weed infested patches and others were simply bizarre - a garden seat that squirts water up your posterior for example.

Even Chelsea this year featured gardens which were about as far removed from gardening as you can get. Why can't someone come out and question this, rather than drooling round, tripping over an eight foot scarf and declaring toothily that everything in the garden is wonderful - which it certainly isn't.

    I just need to say:-
    1. The garish colour scheme beds were meant to be exactly that. They are the flower bed competition entries put in by the local authorities. This competition is unique to Tatton and gives the local authorities' parks departments chance to show off their skills.

    2. I went to the show and thought the gardens were lovely and if you're not there in the flesh you can't really tell. The 'weed infested patches' are our native wild flowers in use and very good they looked too. Even Chris Beardshaw used Deschampsia caespitosa in his beautiful garden. It's an insult to call that a weed. I allowed it to stay at the edge of my lawn and it is now as good as any imported grass. The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú really do not need to show us these flower shows. They are put on by the RHS. I go for the inspiration and if the gardens looked like ordinary back gardens then I for one would be very disappointed. Trilliums office garden was super.

Ah yes, that was the fun element. The garden was for quilted toilet paper. On ground level the undulations in the grass were lovely.

Unfortunately I didn't manage to get to Tatton this year. It still astonishes me how in terms of TV coverage, Chelsea gets the lion's share (some might call it overkill). Tatton is seen in terms of broadcasting time as that minor show in the North although from Cumbria, where I live, I always think of it as being in the Midlands. Next year could the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú consider giving Tatton a larger slice of TV time?

I was at Tatton on Friday and I have to say, the gardens on display were superb. Not all of them were my cup of tea but well executed none the less. The Quilted Velvet garden was lovely and the lawn undulations looked great.
Dont agree at all with the comments in the 1st message. I know (from other peoples comments on Friday) that the planting was well recieved.

Everything is so well organized too. I would have a quibble about the price of champagne but otherwise, all good

Robert you are asking two much, do you think the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú are made of money?
I mean after a week of twelve hours per day Golf,
Three weeks of Tennis, hours of Top Gear repeats and best of's, plus Auctions, Attic clearances and repeats of soaps, they have only tree shillings and fourpence left for gardening program's and by the look of it they do not spend all the money.
Garden shows get at most eighteen hours a YEAR and we sometimes if we are lucky even get a week with Gardeners World in it, not many mind you.
Think about it will you there are millions of homes with gardens and the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú think none of the residents have interest in anything but Golf and tennis.
Apart from making you want to weep at the ineptitude of the TV planners and the arrogance of their foisting off on the viewer what those planners want you to watch, I think it time we all marched on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú and made those over paid fat expense account Directors get off the fat A#### and listen to us the real viewers.
    Frank.

I was at Tatton on the opening day this year and thought the gardens were gorgeous, particularly the Quilted Velvet. The childrens' veg patches were also wonderful. I spent a few minutes watching the GW team trying to put their opening lines together. Carol was tripping herself up over a particular phrase, and then got the giggles. They also had to stop each time a plane took off from Manchester airport, plus also when anyone wheeled a trolley along the metal walkways to shouts of "trolley alert" from Jo Swift. They were up to 15 takes when I left! I wonder how long it takes them to put one episode of GW togther smiley - smiley

I wonder too. I saw Chris Beardshaw do quite a lengthy piece to camera at Chelsea a few years ago. While it took quite a long time to set up the shot, he got it in one take - very professional. On the other hand, James Alexander-Sinclair (he of the hat of whom I am a fan by the way) repeated the same few lines at Hampton Court this summer many many times. He was word perfect (I could see his lines on a note pad the girl directing him had in her hand) but for some reason she kept making him do it again. Couldn't fathom out why?
