Hi I saw this on a programme about growing herbs and veggies in an inner city paved area between block of flats. The bags looked like they could have been used for sand or gravel but I can't be sure. I work in sheltered housing and would love to interest some of the tenants who could manage a small accessible patch. It looked like a portable(when empty) raised bed that was filled with soil/compost and grew enough to make it interesting and worthwhile.
If anyone saw this and can remember the programme or even has used this method I would be so pleased.
best wishes

Sorry - pressed the 'post message' button a bit too quick there! What I was trying to say is that I saw this on Gardeners World probably last year (as not watching it any more). They were using the large bags that builders deliver sand, gravel etc. in which we've always called 'dumpy bags'. In essence, they are just another type of raised beds and were very productive in the community project featured. This RHS link might be of some use:-
Hope you go for it!

These over sized bags would need tons of compost to fil before you sow or plant anything.

I don't see why your couldn't fill the base with something like polystyrene. I know a lot of people who do this with large ornamental pots as you can then cut down on the cost of filling. Very few veg need really deep beds and I would not use compost but topsoil and well rotted manure.

I have seen an article on this in a gardening magazine (The Garden, I think)about bringing community gardening to life in bare open spaces in London.
The bottom of the bags would be filled with somthing like polystyrene, the tops folded over so as not to make them too deep and filled with topsoil. Maybe topsoil is available from the building sites. Anyway, it doesn't really matter how they are filled, but that they worked.

Thanks for responding. I'm certainly going to give it a go. I might have a word with a well known sand and gravel merchant and ask if they would like to sponsor us by donating a couple of bags and soil etc to get the ball rolling. I'll keep the message board informed of progress!
best wishes

Good for you Go for it let us know how you get on.
Sorry to put a downer on things tho, please check with health and safety before you start.
I was in a well known shoe shop yesterday and cldnt bend down to tie the shoes , so asked for help and was told all the foot rests had been removed from all the stores as a health and safety requirement in case someone tripped over them.Apparently someone had tripped in a store in London and had sued the store.
Can you believe it. A shoe shop with out foot rests. The assistant had to kneel on the floor to tie my shoes.I suppose the next thing will be assistants refusing to do this as they will hurt knees.
Anyway hope you get lots of loveley veg and herbs growing.

I have a friend who family run chain of shops (3) they haven't used footstools for years. They took up too much room. Their floors are hoovered every day and no doubt cleaned at least x2 a year.
What is wrong with assistants putting their knee/knees on the floor?
What is your problem?

Amazing
My problem is arthritis which severely restricts movement especially bending down, therefore requireing assistance when buying shoes. It is the 1st time I have been into a shoe shop without foot rests. As to assistants having to kneel on floor I dare say this could cause some problems with Knees.
However the point I was making to Nevil12 was suggesting he/she checks for health and safety requirements before putting large bags of veg in a public place. In this litiginous world that we live in it is better to be safe than sorry.
Do you have a problem with that suggestion?

Ehf I am presuming that the bags will be at least 1 metre cube and very noticable so where's the health and safety issue.
I am sorry that you have mobility problems but I would expect an assistant to tie the laces of shoes that I was buying. Maybe you are using the wrong type of shop eg a superstore, large multi-national where the assistant don't have proper customer care training.

Amazing
I think you have missed the point of my 1st message, it was not to state my problems there are many people much worse than me. I was merely suggesting that it may be prudent to check with health and safey first as it could save a lot if work being undone.Mentioning the visit to the shoe shop was as an example of how health ans safety is interpreted these days.
I am sure Russell and Bromley train the staff to help customers and the assistant I had was most helpful. But you mark my words it is only a matter of time before someone refuses to kneel.
I am sure nevil12 has not taken offence at my suggestion and i hope lots of veg and hers are produced.
