Why did Joe say "but don't put your tulips in yet" when talking about planting spring bulbs ? I've always put in the daffs, tulips and various others at the same time - over this and next week, and they've always been just fine. Have I always been just lucky (like everyone else I know) or has Joe got some secret plan for the tulips. Incidentally, if someone secretly planted bulbs in my patch (nice thought though it would be !) I'd almost inevitably dig them up by accident and wonder what the heck and where had they fallen from !
Tulips root later than other bulbs, when the weather is colder.
If you put them in too early you increase the risk of them rotting in wet soil that is still warm.
I also put all my bulbs in at the same time though, I have to admit. But technically, you maxmise your chances of success with tulips if you leave them until later.
Yes, tulips should be planted when the weather turns colder. Planting late discourages the disease 'Tulip Fire' from developing.

I just heard on GQT that they had trialled a late planting of tulips at Harlow Carr and I think Rosemoor. In both cases those planted in January flowered only 3 days after the earlier plantings and were 100% successful the only difference being that some of the stems were slightly shorter than those planted earlier. By contrast the bulbs planted in February produced a poor result.
We usually put all our spring flowering bulbs in at the same time, which is about now. It's a bit late for daffodils but everything catches up, and we get a superb display.
I've always planted all my spring bulbs at the same time and I've never had a problem with tulips. I guess, like most things in life, it's the luck of the draw and you get what you get!!!
Oh dear. I put my tulips in about 3 weeks ago.
