Ness Sorbus

They kept talking about Sorbus at Ness as Rowans. What about Whitebeams and Service Trees? Are they not represented or have I misunderstood the genus?

He mentioned Sorbus aria, which has entire leaves which are silvery in appearance. This is also known as Whitebeam. Sorbus domestica is known as the Service Tree. I don't think he mentioned that one - I don't think I've seen it in an ormanental planting setting. Sorbus aucuparia with the pinnate leaves is the one usually known as a Rowan.

Just to confuse things a bit more, there is also a Wild Service Tree - Sorbus torminalis, also known as the Chequer Tree and in the Aria section.
You will sometimes see pubs with the chequer board as a sign, but this is a corruption from the Chequers Tree. Apparently a ghastly brew
was made from the fruit, which was purgative and available in such hostelleries. Still if you haven't been 
then you will try anything?
