Monty the farmer. Monty the craftsman. What about Monty the gardener? Are we ever going to see him again? He's the one that I want to watch - and when all is said and done, this is supposed to be a gardening message board.

The saying Jack of all trades Master of none comes to mind. Glad to see he is obviously fit and well again. There seems to be no stopping him. What next i wonder the mind boggles.
But he's person, surely?
Not some cardboard cutout that can only have something to say about one thing!
he obviously has a love of land in all its uses and guises.
Now, if he were to present
I saw a spaceship with with mutants on it, I would think maybe he had sold out a little!

No worse than Fiona Bruce being in charge of the world financial crisis and antique chamberpots.
presenting a show is very different from producing and running the whole deal.... 24 hours in a day is a lot to fill. especially when you do not have a 9-5 job, as in the case of monty.

I agree with the comments thats the problem. Presenters who are on contract to the T.V companies they just get to present anything they can and it gets very boring with the same old faces. One day their dancing next they are reading the news.I begin to wonder where i will see them next. No matter how good they may be the same old faces trying to be make out they knowledgeable on each subject is just a joke.

It would be very surprising if capable people didn't get the offer to diversify into other activities.

I'm not worried. It's up to someone else to prove themselves better.

I don't think presenters do this, but they do need to have an air of confidence or the proramme would fall flat. There are more different presenters on the media than there ever have been, and it's unhelpful to focus on the ones you happen to notice, or dislike. It could even come over as envy!

Quite right Joe.

How exactly does someone do this, Joe? I really don't wish to go over old ground (yet again), but let's look at the facts. The outgoing format was panned by the majority of viewers, and by EVERY newspaper and magazine I saw. This discredited format was enthusiastically supported by Toby et al, and it beggars belief that the same old team are now presumably going to extol the virtues of the new format. This does make them seem half-witted to most viewers - and yet, there they are, at the helm all over again. I don't doubt these people are on lucrative contracts, and getting rid of them will not be quite as easy as I would wish, but just what are they going to say about any new format which is presumably radically different from the tosh they previously served up? I don't doubt the people behind the camera are still in place - the hapless wonders. Curiousity will make me look in to the new season just to see what's happening, but I just can't get enthusiastic about this team. The writing was really on the wall from the moment they changed a theme tune which had been a clarion call to gardeners for such a long time. This was the act of people who were desperate to distance themselves from all that had gone before - and a right royal mess they made of everything. Incidentally, there actually is nothing amiss with the new theme music, but there was nothing at all wrong with the old one either. I know you won't agree with me on this one, Joe, but how can you have any respect for people who are clearly just puppets who do what they're told - people without any principles or beliefs of their own - people who will clearly do anything, and say anything, as long as they remain in the public eye. They'll produce the commercial merchandise, they'll become fairly well-off, but they have absolutely no integrity. That's what's being inflicted on us. I should be euphoric about developments, but I just feel it's going to be the same poor actors in new costumes. We'll soon see, eh.

Apologies Joe. If ever GW are looking for someone who can instinctively grab the wrong end of a stick, someone could forward my name.

I don鈥檛 think Monty should be given a hard time. He is on our televisions a fair bit at present because he is a 鈥減resenter鈥 (and I think a pretty good one but that鈥檚 my opinion) who鈥檚 two new series, one for 麻豆官网首页入口2 and the other for Channel 4, just happen to be airing at the same time. He doesn鈥檛 control the schedules. That鈥檚 someone else鈥檚 job. As Nooj rightly points out, gardening, farming and ancient craftsmanship are all related. No big deal. It makes perfect sense that he gravitates to subjects that interest him and is knowledgeable about as do other presenters.
The saying Jack of all trades Master of none comes to mind. Glad to see he is obviously fit and well again. There seems to be no stopping him. What next i wonder the mind boggles.聽
And his successor on GW has been such a raving success hasn't he?

Talley Ho. I was not making any point about Monty Dons successor on GW. We all know what a lot of rubbish GW is now. What i was trying to point out is that Monty presenting on everything is one thing. First he thought he had the ability to cure the drug addicts. Then he tries to convince prospective farmers how or how not they should continue their lives. He has failed in business himself so not the best person to start telling others how to be successful. Now its Crafts and his little talks to them on how to go about each craft is totally patronising. He is a good presenter but lets just keep it at that he is not an expert in these things.

londonpm,
I feel you are being rather miserable about Monty.
I've no idea how his drug rehab farm is going, or if it still is, but fair play to him for having a go - he certainly had some down times in the process.
He's not trying to convince farmers(!) of anything; he's having a discussion with them, and they presumably volunteered for the programme in the first place, so they might have expected some home truths.
So he failed in business; so did hundreds of thousands in the late 80s, many much bigger than Monty, and many because of the ecomomic situation at the time (remember the interest rates?). But people pick themselves up and start again - it's the only way the country survives.
I don't get the impression that anyone feels patronised, and he leaves it to the experts to instruct. I'm sure he doesn't think he could thatch a barn from a standing start.
Joe
Well said Joe.
LPM鈥 Monty is exactly the right sort of person to advise/present programmes about enthusiastic novices who want to change or turn around their lives 鈥 he's been there himself, failed, succeeded and not only bought the T-shirt but worn it.
Far from patronizing those on his programmes, Monty shows nothing but respect and encouragement 鈥 if you want to see patronizing 鈥 watch a few of GW's programmes over the last couple of years, Joe with his weird 'different' allotment, Toby's garden gnomes (while they were waiting for the 4 ton diggers to finish Greenacres at great expense) Carol and her faux-tense competitions for pupils to spend a couple of weeks with el maestro鈥 I could go on and on鈥
