Two weeks without the sight and sound of Alys has made a significant improvement in the programme but it still has a long way to go.

    Welshcol
I have to watch it on Sky (989 I think)or record it from terrestrial (which comes from the West)and watch later because as you say it is not on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú2 Wales. I sometimes wonder if it is worth the effort.
Byw yn yr ardd on S4C is reasonable if you can understand Welsh or get sub-titles.

I think I'm probably in the minority but I'm finding the new series just a little bit boring. It all seems to be very practical now, very 'how to plant or repot things', and while I'm sure I'm learning something I'd also like to be inspired a little.

I am also finding it boring. I think its more the personality or lack of it. Alys has her new program starting this week from her own garden so lets see if its worth watching. She is very knowledgeable but was made to look stupid with the ridiculous tasks in the last series of GW. At least its mid week as well. She has a great chance now to show her skills lets hope she proves all those who criticise her so much that she is a good gardener. After all she was the person keeping Berryfields going behind the scenes.

while I'm sure I'm learning something I'd also like to be inspired a little.
"Hmm" for inspiration I go to travelogues, master chef, museum of life and the proms.
For factual I go to the news, the review show or gardeners world.
Why must everything we watch be inspirational or have some weird twist to keep our attention.
It drives me up the wall along with thirty second sound bites, shows that just give out a mass of facts without any sort of explanation or proof.
Gardeners world is improving in fact a huge improvement from last year when I just switched off as did many others it seems.
I thought last nights effort was aimed at those people wishing to take the garden back to producing food items in the smallest of plots. It worked as far as I was concerned and very few of the silly mistakes they made last year.
Carol is always worth watching but that is only my opinion feel free to express your.
    Frank.

Unfortunately I missed the beginning last night and only joined at the end of Carol demonstrating how to reporduce lillies. White lillies are one of my favourites, so I was sad to miss that.

Then Joe talked about planting a box hedge and as I am just about to do that myself I was very pleased to get his tips (digging a trench, not individual holes).

    Then my absolute favourite... camellias.

So I thoroughly enjoyed last nights programme and would watch it again happily.

Would also like to say, I think in England you are all spoiled with gardening programmes (taking all channels into account). We in Germany have NOTHING. I am just fortunate I can watch yours. smiley - oksmiley - smooch

I would also like to give thanks to whoever at the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú has sorted out GW. I've watched 3 programmes now with some trepidation after giving up last year, and they seem to be getting better and better. Everything I hated - and there was a long list - has gone. Instead within minutes I was getting some useful tips on seedlings. I'm just about to start a hedge and Joe appeared to talk about hedging plants. The mention of dahlias made me wonder if I had potted mine correctly, so I checked up on them today. Carol was allowed to be informative and interesting without all the hysteria; Toby and Joe have been spared the horrible scripted bonhomie; the cameraman appeared to be sober...

It was, at last, an informative programme about gardening presented by grown ups, for grown ups. Sorry, but the passionate, inspiration seeking folk on a life changing journey will just have to go elsewhere. There are plenty of programmes for them. We gardeners have finally got our Friday evenings back. Thanks a million.

smiley - erm I was thinking that!! I could only assume he may get an hour extra if he got up at the same clock time then have an extra hour of garden time before dark-probably not smiley - doh-perhaps Toby could explain.smiley - winkeye
Good topical programme I thought although the silly cameraman/director with the out of focus shots is back-I had hoped he had retired or better still had got fired!!.
Had never hear of the tomato plant seedling stroking to stop getting straggly-interesting smiley - erm

I also thought the program was so much better. My only one tiny problem was with the cameraman, he seemed to be glued to Toby's face when I wanted to see what he was doing with the seedlings. I really didn't want to be negative - the rest was really good - especially Carole.

A pleasing and informative programme: thank you. The clocks spring forward at 2am Sunday morning, so we have an extra hour of daylight, and one less in bed Sunday morning. smiley - laugh
I love the idea of stroking seedlings - they are sort of pets, aren't they? It will make them stronger, and is lovely and soothing to do.
I was interested in the mention of 'static' which apparently sometimes occurs when handling seedlings, making their roots reluctant to go in the hole and the measures to counter it - I've learned something new. I must say that I never noticed any of the thousands of seedlings I pricked out over my working life showed any reluctance; perhaps my personal magnetism counteracted the 'static'? The only static I've seen is someone leaning on a hoe for ten minutes. smiley - biggrin

Why not use this to recharge batteries.
Pick up seedling (by a single leaf) place battery over hole dibbed in pot,
Tickle seedling root over battery and hey presto one charged up battery.
The seedling will be tired after its discharge and sink gratefully into the hole perchance to sleep.

The GW pr. is informative and enjoyable but I cannot agree with some of Toby B. advice. Some weeks ago he planted some rhubarb crowns too close together; last Friday after repotting the tiny tomato seedlings he gave them a good watering in. Its better not to wet the leaves for several months just the compost.

It's good to see Yakram is still on form and still on the case. I do agree about those rhubarb crowns and the tomato seedlings Rini.

All in all, GW is much improved but TB is still a bit sloppy.

Good to see Joe back on design and no longer on veggies. I understand that he has abandoned his allotment and that it has been reassigned. His allotment neighbours are enjoying the crops he left but the new people will not enjoy all that mare's tail.

I've watched all three of the new series and have been pleasantly surprised that Gardeners World has reverted to being a programme about the process of gardening.
Have we seen an end to the makeovers, the celebrity appearances, the weird art and design? I hope so. Do the production team now realise that we have an attention span longer than that of the average goldfish? This seems possible.
Are we going to go back to a pattern of blockbuster one hour programmes and then a couple of weeks off the air (in other words a completely unreliable schedule that is bound to make viewers drift away again)? Hmm. If GW is that hard to schedule, I'm quite happy to watch it on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú3 or anywhere the competition is perhaps not so sexy.
    Don
