Does anyone else think the GW yesterday seemed very dumbed down compared to last years mates in a shed, competitions etc et? Are they bringing back the hour long progs?

just to clarify I'm not talking about the information content, just the bizarre stuff they were getting up to last year.

Tom, I think they are trying very hard to take on board the many criticisms that have (justifiably imo) been levelled at them.

It's not perfect. For me, it's not un-missable as it used to be - but it has tried to be, first and foremost, a gardening programme.

So far, so acceptable. If I'm in on a Friday, I'll watch it. If I miss it, I won't be bothered to record it or watch it on Iplayer.

I do think they are trying and it is a bit better....
..........but one thing I don't like is clearly the programme presenters are not doing all the work, probably they couldn't, there's so much to do it must require some staff and work we never hear about.

I would prefer some reference to who does, some one has been piling in the muck and compost and labour to that horrible soil they started with.

They always seem to have all the compost they need smiley - winkeye

I wonder if the overall problem is just what you have described. Gone is most people's ability to relate to it. i.e. thinking back to Mr Hamilton's gardens, even when he built them from scratch he made everything and did everything himself...or certainly he would have been able to. Even Titchmarsh and Don were working on established plots so it seemed likely they/us could do what was being shown. Like you say, it would be impossible for the presenters to come even close to doing the work required on the new garden. BUT BUT BUT, I'm very very glad GW is back and hope it keeps going in the same/similar manner to Friday's show. I switched off from the last series so it can only get better.

Half an hour watching Toby double-digging a border would make riveting television.

There would be absolutely no need to show half an hour of double digging, a couple of minutes would suffice to show the people who don't know how to do it the proper way. The time spent on wasteing how to do out of focus camerawork would be sufficent.

    Cloggies,

Perhaps I should have put a smiley - winkeye after that message. The point I was clearly failing to make is that everyone(?) knows that they don't spend all week in the GW garden, in the same way that we all know Paxo doesn't set the University Challenge questions.

Maybe if the camerateam spent more time in the garden from a gardeners viewpoint and less from a media viewpoint then maybe they could see where the millstone around the neck in the show is, IMHO.
I'm shocked that Paxo doesn't set the questions Joe smiley - winkeye I love the faces he pulls when a contestant has the temerity to get a "obvious"(if there is such a thing) question wrong. smiley - laugh

I'm sure the camera team must have ten more progs to film every week, so if they spent the whole week at GW, instead of half a day, the programmes would cost more.

Paxo's patronising sneer when someone doesn't know the answer to something he happens to be familiar with will hopefully haunt him in his old age.
