I was so relieved watching GW last Friday (9 April). Before Toby took over I thought he would be good. But it was terrible watching everything go wrong from day-one (the silly banter with Joe, racing between features, trying to turn it into a light entertainment show, etc). I even attended a lecture at a leading horticultural college a few months ago when the talk had been moved to a Friday evening and the host joked that he was sorry to the two people in the audience who might be missing GW that night. It had got that bad that dedicated gardeners (and there were some famous names in the audience, let alone presenting on stage) were laughing at it.
But last Friday I thought it was great. Truly great. It was like watching the show when AT and CB were involved. And all along I knew Toby was capable. It was just the way the producers had not allowed Toby to be himself.
Toby, just talking to the camera about the subject without trying to make banter showed you to be the capable host we all want. Well done, and fight to make them let you keep doing this.
"Great. Truly great". Really? Oh please, GW is a long, long way from being that.
I'm really pleased that it has improved so much and regained much of what it once was but please, no more extravagent adjectives until it beins to warrant it. But I am so very grateful it's getting there at last.
Yep, Toby is superb. After a shaky start, he's great this series. Best of all are his useful tips - I actually feel as though I'm learning something. I think he's the best presenter since Geoff Hamilton, giving info you CAN USE.
Great - really enjoying this series!
I too think this series is superb. After a shaky start, Toby has become the best presenter since Geoff Hamilton. No gimmicks, just good advice that most amateur gardeners will find useful. It's his tips that are the best.
Carol seems to have lost her groove, Alice I find a bit patronising, and Joe tolerable, but I'm enjoying the programme more than I have for numerous years, even though Monty was good.
Thanks BBGW, from a 40 year old amateur gardener.
toby is not superb
>Carol seems to have lost her groove<
Her material is hardly scintillating, but she's like an librarian of age.
Sorry, cannot agree.
A good gardener would not be using his felco secateurs to cut wire with. But then I suppose the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú pay for his secateurs so it does not matter.
Beechgrove again wins all the way
Felco secateurs have a special notch at handle end of blade for wire cutting - see below
Appreciated by professional pruners for its strength. handles have rubber shock absorber and cushion to protect the wrist. Toothed centre-nut for aligning the cutting and anvil blades easily and precisely for a clean, accurate cut. Blade and wire cutting notch, sap groove, riveted anvil blade, forged aluminium alloy handles
I always use my Felcos for cutting wire. The notch seems to work better than wire cutters and is indeed what it was designed for and anyway the secateurs are usually in my pocket or in my holster.
"At last, Toby is a triumph"
mmm .... I'm afraid I wouldn't go that far copywrite. Credit where it's due, he has definitely improved and is easier to watch and listen to than he was last year. But I still cannot warm to him. Maybe just too much was wrecked last year? Time will tell.
