Toby's idea to use the top of a fizzy drink bottle sunk into the ground beside a tree/shrub is a good one but PLEASE PLEASE cover the top with a piece of old tights, or any netting, to prevent frogs, hedgehogs, beetles falling in. We once found and rescued a little frog struggling to get out.
I would think carefully about doing ANYTHING TB suggests! Like cutting thick galvanised wire with your secateurs for instance.
Felco secateurs have a wire cutting notch at the base of the blade - though it did look as if he used the main blade rather than the notch.
Or using grass cuttings as a hanging basket liner?????!!!!!
I have 2 large water bottles (one inside the other to make longer)upside down in the centre of my strawberry planter for ease of watering. I have a small flowerpot in the top (bottom) not only will that hopefully prevent accidents to wildlife as mentioned, but it also stops the compost from falling into the bottles if disturbed by rain/squirrels, etc. Nan x
What a good idea Nan - I'm going to try that - it's brilliant.
Happy to help. Nan x
