I have very much enjoyed this series, it seems more down to earth than some of the other gardening programmes on TV. However, I and many of my friends would like to know if Alys has written a book to accompany the series. I am sure that she could write a book for each programme in the series and include the recipes and the methods for some of the things she makes. If not, could she please put the recipes and methods on line for us to print off.
The Edible Garden, by Alys Fowler, Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Book. get it at Amazon.co.uk
It's on offer at The Book People
Hi Elaine, guess you are a beeb avatar?

Hi Elaine, guess you are a beeb avatar Â
- haha - I thought that as well.....
It looks very likely MDE!
It's such a shame the series has finished already. I have enjoyed my weekly feel-good fix. It's been so nice to be invited into her garden and to see all the triumphs and woes of her gardening year.
When the weather was bad she consoled herself by making biscuits in the kitchen, which is the kind of thing that I do. Things didn't always go right - when the hail killed all her seedlings she looked really upset and had a consoling cup of tea. When things did go well it was wonderful. I also loved the allotment guys!
I don't always like her segments in Gardeners World but she shone in this program.
I don't know about others, but I found these progs. very relevant. My type of gardening, and did point up to new gardeners that even professionals suffer the same sort of mishaps as us ordinary potterers. Plus what can be crammed into small spaces.
PS What's an avatar?
I wondered that too Groovygran. I looked it up and the dictionary said it was a released soul in bodily form. I don't think that is what is meant here.
the word Avatar comes from Hindu religion and is quite old.
But on internet it is the symbol or person that you use to represent yourself. So 'groovygran' and 'pottypam' are your Avatars.
I thought an avatar has form, shape; surely a word, even a pseudonym, has no "form". However, I admit that I'm not remotely certain about my theory!
Hi Artemis, well yes of course ones name on these boards is actually a pseudonym!
But I think the word avatar has come to be used as a general all-encompassing term.
As to the form, or the shape - well that is the character that comes out in the way each person (misrep)presents themselves on the boards - and of course to many misunderstandings!
I think you're probably right, treechange. Words so often become far removed from their original meaning that one can claim they've become misnomers.
An avatar is usually a pjcture
Avataar is a Sanskrit word, used in Hindu religion to explain the second, third or more form of the same God. Vishnu had many forms and names.
Blimey, what have I started!
Anyway, "Elaine" has not posted before or since, which proves my (maybe intellectually misguided) point!
Not heard from you for ages MalanD, hope all is well.
Yes, it has been rather an unusual run of messages for the gardening boards!
Does anyone know where I can get one of those sacred trees as in the film 'Avatar'? It would look great in my garden. T&M don't sell them.
Changing the discussion back to the Edible Garden.
I shall really miss it tonight, I might have to watch it again on Iplayer.
Oh yes, that was the original subject wasn't it.
I felt the same this evening - no Edible Garden
I never did manage to get any dried peas to try her pea shoot idea. I have taken her idea of putting chopped rosemary in bread. I added it to my bread roll recipe and they were great. I tried using chopped sage the next week and that was good too.
Morning Koala_girl
I've copied a few of Ayls ideas, got my wine boxes planted with salad crops, and went out this morning and my pea shoots are just coming up, pkt a dried peas 35p loads in them, so that a baragin, it still not too late to have a go.
I also planted aurbegines seeds, and thought I was unsucessful, I've been waiting for 2/3 weeks for them to germinate, was just going to sling them and guess what, tiny green shoots, (oh I Love gardening)
I couldn't get hold of any wine boxes, but I noticed that Sainsbury's had some very thick cardboard boxes which apples had come in. They are quite wide but not very deep. I lined one with an empty compost sack (with drainage holes punched in) and have planted it up with lettuce. Looks good so far.

A really lovely programme (IMO) and I'm sad it's over
Alys did what no other gardening programme has ever achieved - got me planting veggies in my flower borders!
Thank you Alys

Bluedoyenne - Did you never have the pleasure of seeing Geoff Hamilton's 'Ornamental Kitchen Garden'?
I loved this programme too. It was down to earth and practical. I also fell in love with her little jack russell! The star of the show!
More programmes like this please Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú!
Hello David,
I'm sure at some stage I must have seen it, but to be honest I don't remember. It was mid-way during GH's tenure at GW that I started gardening and at that time my aim was simply to create a pretty garden (had just escaped life in a flat in the city). Now my priorities have changed and as I cannot dig veg plots in my garden without destroying it, I'm going to try and combine the two types of planting (productive and ornamental). Do you know if GH wrote a book about his ornamental kitchen garden?
Laura - you and me both!
I've already promised myself that the day I retire (hopefully not too far away now ) I'm going to get myself a Jack Russel. Isobel is such a sweet dog and I enjoyed seeing her as much as Alys (and her lovely chooks too).
My father's dog is a jack russel/king charles spaniel cross. I can't imagine him letting anyone transport him in the front basket of a bicycle! I thought it was so cute the way Isobel calmly sat there.
