Hello all
A quick reminder that Gardeners' World is on air tonight at 8.30pm on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú2. Tonight Toby will be busy planting up hanging baskets and Carol takes a close look at the spurge family. Joe takes cuttings for his back garden and there are plenty of tips on how to get the best out of your alpines.
Was the bit about Aberglasny gardens filmed last year? Their hardy geraniums were in full bloom but mine haven't even started to get buds yet, and I grow several varieties.
Toby put coffee grounds around his newly planted hosta. Does this really work? I can only grow hostas in heavily defended pots.
I was relieved to see that Joe put a hedgehog escape route in his pond. I really didn't like that pond when he first put it in and I was also worried about the hedgehogs. I must admit that I still don't like the pond.
Joe divided that grass the way I prefer to divide plants. I always saw them in half because you get two even sized plants. I've never got on with the two fork method.
Another super programme. My hardy geraniums have been in flower for about 3 weeks now
I noticed that just after the Glebe Cottage woman warned about using gloves with Spurges, Toby was happily planting one in the basket without any protection. They can't both be right!
Hi Colin,
the Glebe Cottage woman Â
her name is Carol..........
Euphorbias (spurges) do contain irritant sap. I don't react to it, but I know others do. It's also horrible if you get it in your eye and Carol was swinging the stems around like a dervish - I was a bit nervous for her!
I don't bother wear gloves if I'm just handling a plant for potting up etc., but do if I'm cutting them back as there's more sap being exposed.
I have some Stipa arundinacea about the same size as Joe's. They look big, but down at root level they are only about 4" across. They are quite slow to bulk up and don't like being over-divided. If one of them will divide into 15 and be plantable this year I'll be impressed/surprised.
I'll do one myself to see....
please do Trillium and let us know,
Looked a bit dubious to me too, but if it works what a saving!
the stipas' i have divided bulked up fast over the course of a summer, will try the same with my lessingiana seedlings (growing fast now)
no i don't like the joe design. more of a lutyens jekell italian balustrade rose garden guy myself.
sort of like
or
japanese
two forks is fine if you have two forks. i don't. so i use a kitchen knife.
But judging by the lack of frothing at the mouth by many posters - it was a better programme?

This series is far superior to what went before it - but it may take time before it gives many of us the warm glow of yesteryear. I enjoy most of the current content, but in truth, I'm fairly lukewarm about the presenters. I still find it remarkable that the very people who turned the programme into a disaster, are still in place. At the very least, Joe and Alys should have been ditched, as neither really have what it takes to be a constant on the country's top gardening programme. Nevertheless, I'm at least tuning in on friday nights now, and it's certainly nice to get back in the old routine.
Without wishing to sound too patriotic, I honestly do prefer The Beechgrove Garden currently, which always seems to be discussing subjects that are relevant to the ordinary gardener.
To be perfectly honest, I am currently finding GW a bit on the boring side. Informative, but I feel as if I am sat in a classroom receiving a lecture.

..but it was always so!
Although I'm still feeling extremely annoyed about the damage they did to last year's GW, I'm now starting to feel a bit sorry for them.
They have listened & acknowledged they got it wrong and have now reverted to the more traditional style...still they get criticised.
For myself, I think that the present program smacks at being a repair job and needs new presenters with new ideas.
Alys is dire!
You can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but never all of the people all of the time (or something like that).
