I used to buy a lot of mags, but you pay 2 or 3 pounds or more for a mag and its full of adverts, so I only buy them occassional now - the last one was one about growing veg - name has escaped me but it was useful ( i'll look it up when I get home ) but I do re -read them until hubby moans about how big the pile getting.smiley - yikes

I've also got a big pile of gardening books too, Ayles edible garden on my birthday list. smiley - winkeye

I once had standing orders for most of the popular ones until I realised that there were stacks of them in cupboards taking up room never to be opened again.
Building up your own library of books is the best way, at least you do look up your problems in them.
I am retired, came from gardening stock and done it all my life but those books are still well used, you cannot know or remember everything a quick reference can save a multitude of mistakes and we all make them.
I will still pick up a magazine if there is an article I wish to read but the asking price for half a book of adverts is off putting.
    Frank.

I agree with Palaisglide in that books are far better value for money. I always find myself going back and re-reading them.
Having said that, I have a subscription to Gardeners World magazine, although I'm thinking of ending it as there's just too much fluff in it and not enough articles about gardening. I also have a subsription to Garden News which is much better that any magazine I've read. I shall keep that one. Also it's a weekly and look forward to it's arrival every Tuesday.

I used to have a subscription to GW magazine but canelled it when I realised I could reserve a copy here each month and still get the freebies which don't come to Belgium by post.

Recently I've cancelled that order too as it is very repetitive and full of ads and it's quite expensive over the year.

For a similar price I get a year's sbscription to the RHS which includes an excellent magazine each month with all the ads at the front and back and not mixed in with the articles so easy to avoid or search. I also get free access to RHS gardens when I'm in the UK, preferred access to shows like Chelsea and free acess to RHS experts for problems and questions and I can order seds collected in their gardens. What's not to like?

For instant info, I consult the RHS website or my books of google plant names to find cultivation info. I've tried other gardening mags but they don't tempt me unless I have to do something like sit in a launderette for the annual washing and tumbling of continental quilts.
